Maple in Snow

Don't ask me why... at 4:05 AM this morning I woke up and began humming, "Would You Like to Swing on a Star". Here are a couple verses"

"Would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a mule

A mule is an animal with long funny ears
He kicks up at anything he hears
His back is brawny but his brain is weak
He's just plain stupid with a stubborn streak
And by the way if you hate to go to school
You may grow up to be a mule"

I first heard it, I think, either with Bing Crosby singing it in "Going My Way" or in a Little Lulu(remember her?) cartoon. And I do know that the hilarious "Far Side" parodied it with a depiction of a man-turned-pig saying to his wife, "Hey, so I made the wrong decision! (referring to the part of the song which says "Or would you rather be a pig") "But I wasn't sure I wanted to swing on a star, carry moonbeams home in a jar!"
Hahaha
!
But what made me start humming this morning though? Where do these things come from that just pop in and spend the day with us? And no, this tree out front never had a swing attached. I knew some of you are thinking that. I'm off to brunch to try to get it out of my head!

  1. Thanks. So now it's in our heads. What fun. So many roads to travel in this post. You'll have my brain tripping along all day, musing on this and what it's brought up.

  3. Well you got stuck on something pretty. I got stuck on my youngest memories of my mom pouring hot gravy in my dad's lap. It ended up in a divorce before I got in the first grade. But the rest of the story is on Abraham Lincoln's Blog.

  4. I'd like to swing up into that tree, altho I'd prefer to wait 'til summertime ..."and the livin' is easy!!"

  5. Well, I have to thank you.
After you got up, I was still in bed watching the Old Man and the Sea on TCM. Watched it 3/4's of the way and fell asleep. Woke up to a rather loud version of a woman, with a terrible voice, singing 'That Old Time Religion' in a new movie. Then they kept playing that tune throughout every scene and it's a horrible song. Couldn't get it out of my head.....until this new song.
    So, thank you.......I think.

  6. I haven't heard that song in years, so if it gets stuck in my head, I guess I won't mind.

  7. Well I don't know but I've had the "Hokey Pokey " stuck in mine for days.
Thanks for reminding me of your song. Like your tree too, Bird!

  9. I've never heard that before. The funny thing is, even if you do succeed in getting it out of your head, one visit back to this page will start it right up again ;-)
It's crazy how our brains remember songs. I'll hear a song that I haven't heard in years, and yet I'll know the words to it. How does that happen when so many other songs get loaded in the brain? Hope you had a good brunch:-)

  10. I remember Bing singing it and now I have it in my head! I had the Beatles "in My Life" there for the day after your post this week.

  11. Interesting how a tune can get in your head and it stays with you all day. can be irritating at times.

  12. You are too funny, Mr. Bird! Now I will probably be singing it all afternoon... I did love that Far Side take on it also... that was a favorite along with the one with the dog hanging out of the window announcing that he was "going to get tutored" - hah!

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  15. Great shot! It does make me wonder when that happens. What's worse is when you can't get it out of your head.

  16. I haven't had any particular songs on my mind today. It is almost 11:30 p.m. and I am about to go to bed, so if I stay awake humming about mules and stars, I know where to find you.
