Yellow Iris

My favorite flower is the iris. Right now the backyard is scattered with them, various purples, these yellow ones and assorted blood reds. The iris pops up in lots of places, besides Elenka's gardens. The fleur-de-lis, a stylized iris, can be found on the flags of Quebec and St. Louis Missouri and on the helmet of the New Orleans Saints, the professional football team. Interesting! The saddest part for me is their stay in the yard is so brief. I'll enjoy them the next few days waving the the gentle afternoon breezes.

  1. They are pretty, Birdman, but I never had much success with them and they have such a short season that I can no longer persuade myself to make the effort with them. Glad they work in your garden.

  3. Thanks to Mr. Brattcat's flower arranging skills, we have vases of iris on our dining room and kitchen tables. Nothing like a blue iris in a blue vase with the sun gleaming through...except for this natural blonde beauty of yours.

  5. Love irises, but like others, I wish their blooms were longer lasting.

  6. Such a shame they only last for such a short while, so that is a Summer flowering bulb right Birdman??

  10. Simply gorgeous. I don't get to see many of these because it's just too hot in the Phoenix area to grow them. However a few miles north in the mountain areas, they grow well. But, like you, I'm sad to see them around for such a short time.

  13. I love them too but it has turned very hot here today which is going to shorten their time even more!

  14. The Iris is one of my favorites also. Different varieties of Irises bloom early in the season, mid and late season. The trick is to grow ones that bloom throughout the Iris season.

  15. It's also the emblem of St. Louis University, my alma mater. Our city was founded by French explorers, which is why it's on the municipal flag. Enjoy the intense but brief pleasure of the flowers.
