Seafood

Like seafood? Like beer? There's a good combination here at J's Oyster on the waterfront. I used to stop by quite a bit before the proliferation of all the sports bars with their walls laden with multiple flat screen TVs. It was a fine place to get out of the heat, have a favorite brew and take in a Sox game on a summer night. I'll take on just about any kind of seafood, but never was a big oyster kind of guy though. When I see the meat of an oyster lying there on the half shell ready for the taking , I just can't help but think of... well, you really don't want to know. So here's my restaurant review today: Beer- cold!, Oysters- pass, Decor- go for the seafood not he decorations, Outside Dining- in a parking lot? You've got to be kidding! Again, go there for the seafood not the ambiance, and you'll probably leave happy.

*Yesterday, amid thunderstorms, I did sample my first Shandy (cold glass, 1/2 beer, 1/2 lemonade) the recipe courtesy of my blogfriend in Perth. I must admit. It was refreshing. Try it!

  1. Nice color combination as well.
This reminds me of the old joke: I'm on a seafood diet. I see food and eat it.

  2. I have always loved places that have great food and terrible decor. It just means they focus on what is important.

  3. I'll pass on the oysters, too. And eating outside. And I'm not sure the seafood would be good enough to make the ambiance palatable...but, I'd try it once...can't beat a cold beer on a hot summer's day.

  4. This is the kind of place I like to go for seafood. Nothing fancy just good food.

  5. A dozen oysters on the half shell and an ice-cold beer -- now that's what I call a delight!

  7. Have to say I agree, oysters just don't do it for me either, slithery little suckers. So Elenka and yourself enjoyed the 'shandies' Birdman, seeing as you are both into cocktails just now, here's another for times when you want a 'mocktail' it's called a Rock Shandy. You put your ice in the glass, add Angostura Bitter, mix by pouring in soda water and ginger ale, plus slice lemon to finish, cheers!! Ah the things I learnt in Africa!

  8. I would join you for the sea food there..
But.. i d rather have a glass or two of white chilled wine to go with it instead of the beer.

  9. I just absolutely love raw oysters. I've quit eating them since many of the Gulf oyster beds are contaminated.

That looks like a great place to eat. Way back when when I was in grade school in Utah I was a major Red Sox fan. Yaz, Tony Conigliaro, those were my guys.

I found a premade shandy that I like. I never thought about making my own!! Thanks for the link to the recipe.

  10. Not a great fan of seafood and beer, which is a shame considered where I live, but I'll give this place a try anyway: you have been so convincing!

  11. Hey PDP-
Hear me now; hear me roar. I DON't do mocktails or non-alcholic beer. Life's too short! hahahaha

I could never eat an oyster without gagging... had to when I was a kid, we couldn't get away with saying no to what my mom cooked... buy after leaving home, one have never passed my lips... lol! J's Oyster looks like an old fashioned place, sometimes they are best...

  22. I'm with you on the oysters . . . but one thing we loved about being in Maine was the proliferation of lobstah places. Maybe you get tired of it, living there, but mm, mmm, we loved that sweet, fresh lobster.

  23. Oh, just pass ME all the oysters you people are turning down... We eat them in all ways, but only raw ones from very cold waters (Pacific, for example). I am a wine girl but seafood calls for a rare beer for me!

  24. Ya gotta go to places like this instead of the sports bars. If you don't go, Birdman, who will? I am not a fan of oysters, either. I have simple food tastes and am thrilled to have a fisherman's platter, with extra tartar sauce.

  25. I'm a flatlander and I do oysters, although I have to repress many associations. But then there are those who enjoy the Rocky Mountain variety. My Kansas in-laws are partial to red beer, Bud with a shot of tomato juice.

  27. What? You'd never had a shandy? We call it a panaché in France!

I'll be right over for seafood lunch but I'll skip the beer. Any white wine?
