Fire Barn Icicles

Fire and Ice
It can get hot! It can be very cold! Here are some icicles hanging off a local fire barn. Back on Stevens Avenue when a thaw was followed by a big freeze, it was always icicle time. In the corner near one of the back entrances, there was a place where large junks of ice always grew. It would form in multiple clusters, in widths of 12-15 inches. On days that I was especially bored, I'd get my trusty hammer and commence to have some icicle fun. Often the ice broke up in large sections, and I felt especially gratified and thought I was doing my family duty of ridding the roof of the pesky ice sculptures. Sometimes though, the wall of ice was as hard as stone and even the hammering got me nowheres. It seemed to always render a thirst though, and pieces of ice fit the bill. Sucking away! Today, I'd probably be reminded that the frozen water, hanging from the roof, was dirty and full of assorted crap. Back then though, it was only a quenching relief, where ever it was hanging.

  1. By knocking those icicles down you probably saved someone from a head injury. -- barbara

  2. Yeah, I remember chewing on icicles. Wouldn't do that anymore. Sometimes when I get older I get smarter. Sometimes not so much. So, are have you been enjoying the Sunshine State? And I've been feeling sorry for you up in the northlands. Sheesh!

It's gonna be in the 30s here Sunday morning. Not a good thing. I hate that freezing weather.

  3. Icicles, a sure sign of poor insulation, but then old houses didn't have much in the way of insulation. While it freezes all winter here in the north country, don't see too many house with them.

  4. I was just thinking about the times I sucked on ice cycles. Yuk, all that dirty water that ran of the garage roof.

  6. Oh my gosh Birdman, I've just been catching up, it's absolutely mind boggling how much snow that you've had, your images show the dilemma perfectly. I could hear the scrape and swish of snow shovels as I was reading! Surely there must be an end to it soon? Unbelievable.. freezing there and scorching here, the world is a crazy, weird place!

  7. I remember sucking on icicles, & since childhood I had loved them until the time that they created ice dams on my roof & leaks. Now I roof rake as soon as possible. But they still are gorgeous...

  14. Icicles are rare here and quite dangerous because people are not used to them...
