Storm Front

Here's what we woke to yesterday morning. Yes, it was still snowing and continued until about 1 PM. It certainly was a good thing that I ran the snowblower up the driveway a few times Friday afternoon. The main blizzard transpired overnight and dropped over 2 feet. The look when daylight struck was a bit jaw-dropping! My Toro a very good machine, but at 35.5 inches, it just about met its match. The drifts were the killers! This photo is no exaggeration. We got a lot of snow. The previous weeks' relatively mild weather and rain had rendered the ground down to the grass in most cases. This was a good thing. After we shoveled and looked back at the walkway and saw the size of the banks, Elenka and I both realized something. Since 1977, indeed we have had this much snow before, but NEVER all at once like this deluge.
I'd love to keep typing, but I really need to go shovel some more. That and do some day-dreaming of the warm Florida sunshine. Ah...

  1. And just to be clear, that is NOT a drift against the door.

The birds are happy, they just have to take a mere step off the birdfeeder that Birdman stocks so lovingly, to pick up the seeds they drop!

  4. Your description is reminding my of those old journals & post cards, where folks record the details of such events as these. And how precious they are as part of oral/personal history. Today is gorgeous, I'm just about to go to the ocean to enjoy the view...Tomorrow it may start to wash away...Enjoy it, you all!

  6. Lucky you to have a snowblower. I don't feel so bad with what we got, but it did get cold in the house when we lost power during the height of the storm.

  7. I thought of you every time they mentioned the amount of snow in Maine. Glad you are safe and have electricity! Stay warm you two!

  10. Well you be careful with all that shovelling. That is a huge bunch of snow.Stay warm and stay dry.

BTW: not only did we park under that eagle but we got out of the car and talked to him too. I think the Eagles here are getting used to having their picture taken and they know they could chase the humans if they wanted to. LOL. Hawks are a different story--they generally fly away if you get too close. MB

  18. Haven't seen that much snow for a long time - probably since 1967 in Chicago when our kids played on top of the cars which were just barely visible.

Can't imagine dealing with all this. But I did manage to get in a round of golf this morning in the warm Florida sunshine (well, it was a cold and windy 55 when we started - but I put on a sweatshirt and persevered!)

  22. It seems that Portland was right at the center of this one, Birdman. I'm glad that Elenka and you got through it well.

  24. It's hard for us here in the middle to understand, although I've seen some pretty big dumps in New York. I haven't talked to my brother in Southborough, MA, and I wonder how his family is doing. We'll be way, way south by the weekend so we're thinking about other things.

  25. Seems as though both you and the snowblower got a good workout!

  26. Been thinking about you, Mr. Bird, and hoping that you fared well through the storm. I am glad that you are taking some breaks from the "snow removal" if that is what you call it. It sounds arduous to me.
