Tunafish

Ok, let's set the scene. I'm a 'dead man walking', and I'm heading to my last meal. The warden asks, "Whatca want son?" Now, you might want to sit down for this. My reply would be a toasted tunafish sandwich, with cheese and lettuce. Hey, call me crazy... and many of you will, but that would be my call. Mom made them all the time, and I got hooked. There used to be a wonderful vegetarian restaurant in the city called The Hollow Reed that we often went to on Saturdays for lunch. Elenka would always order something unique and especially veggie oriented. Me? They had an outstanding tuna sandwich on delicious homemade, wheat bread with a generous spread of sprouts. Every time we went there, that's what I ordered. Elenka would open the menu, wave it in my face and just rolled her eyes.
She'd say, "Nothing else interests you on this menu? Come on." My refrain was always the same, "Nope." Drove her crazy!
Love tunafish; always will!

  2. Not my choice, but I know how certain foods (and places to eat them) make you feel comfortable. It's grilled cheese for me.

  3. I'm on that tuna boat with you. I love tuna sandwiches. There is great little sandwich shop near here that I've gone to many times. They have a huge selection of wonderfully named and creatively crafted sandwiches. I always get the the tuna salad on 12 grain bread with cucumber slices. I never deviate.

  4. Whatever makes you happy. Try this...add chopped up water chestnuts to your tuna fish along with some onion and celery...top off with lettuce and/or sprouts. (Toast and cheese too).

  5. And that's why in certain places in Florida (which shall remain unmentioned) you are know as "The Big Tuna."

  10. I can take tuna or leave, but I wouldn't mind having some of those braided place mats.

  11. So, you have already made your decision about the answer when the warden tells you it is time for your last meal? Umm, I have not thought that far ahead and will wait until the need to decide arises . . .

  13. I like tuna fish okay now but there was a time in my life that I didn't eat the stuff - for about 40 years. It so happens that my grandparents had a little grocery and feed store out in the country and for several years, during a period when most kids don't like what the grown-ups are eating, my grandpa allowed me to go in the store and take a can of tuna fish instead of eating the turnip greens and biscuits and ham with red eye gravy or whatever else my grandma was serving that day. After about five years of doing this about three times a week, I finally got so sick of the stuff I couldn't stomach to even look at it anymore, much less smell it. I finally was able to gradually get back into tuna, very slowly, until now I actually enjoy it. In fact, there's a bowl of tuna salad in the fridge right now. I like it made with dill pickles, onions, and boiled eggs with a little plink of mustard and a big plunk of mayo served on lightly toasted bread with a little lettuce.

  14. I can't remember the last time I ate tuna. Kind of tough when you live with cats who would take me out if I tried.

  19. You sound exactly like my dear husband who ALWAYS orders a tuna sandwich with onions, tomatoes, and lettuce on sourdough bread. Occasionally he will experiment with a different type of bread. Sigh!
