Danforth Curb

Some berries have fallen beneath a tree, onto the curb and into Danforth Street here. What they are called, I do not know. We used to call them choke cherries, and located throughout the neighborhood, the crows loved them. We did not! Yes, I sampled them! They tasted terrible and made me shudder. Of course, back then lots of things made me shudder: falling off our raft into cold Gulliver's Pond in springtime, peaches stolen from old man Oliver's trees late at night, Kissing Hide and Go Seek, and delivering papers at 5 AM among others. Funny how a song, a place, a face, a photograph can take you swirling back in time.

* ps. Yes, this picture was taken just last week. Not a fall shot... but spring.

  1. I really love it when things make you time travel like that. Certain smells do it for me too. A certain ointment / medicine I sometimes catch a whiff of almost conjures my grandfather right in front of me, who was only alive until I was 6. He must have used something similar I guess.

  2. I imagine the birds enjoy these berries a lot.
Very interesting point about things that bring us nostalgic feelings and memories.

  3. The science of memories is fascinating, and I'm happy to know that sights and sounds trigger memories. It is often wistful and melancholy!

  4. Your opening sounds like the start of a Robert Frost poem:

Some berries have fallen beneath a tree,
onto the curb and into Danforth Street.
What they are called I do not know.

  5. I was wondering if those berries had fallen already this year. Nice food for the birds and thier new families.

  6. They are probably fermented berries from last fall - wobbly birds to come!

  7. Nice shot. I like the colors in this photo. Proves you don't have to look afar to find a good subject to photograph.

  8. Come on birds, a feast awaits you. Birdman does not like them! :-)

  9. I used to play alchemist with berries like these when I was a kid! My little brother luckily never agreed to test my potions...

  10. They do look like cherries...but not chokecherries. Interesting that they have fallen this time of year.

  12. That's a beautiful photo of spring growth but I like it even better if I look at it as an abstract. The pattern makes me think of the patterns you see in illustrations of particle colliders.

  13. And smells, they help stir memories as well. We have little red berries like this on nandina, planted around our yard.
