Spring Weekend#4

I just can't pass up a used book sale! Good or bad, I'll take a chance. In Boothbay Harbor, I wandered over to the 'porch book sale' and wasn't disappointed. Hey, can you go wrong picking up Studs Terkel's Working for 25 cents? It's his oral history collection of people talking about what they do all day. Two of my other favorites of his are Hard Times, on the people of the Great Depression and The Good War, his interviews with WWII veterans. I enjoy oral histories that you can open any place and be entertained for as long as you like. Quite a deal for a quarter! However, this Golden Retriever doesn't look too impressed.

  1. Sounds like a good find -- the book and the ambiance. Looks like the golden has endured the book shopping routine before.

  3. The retriever was bummed that they didn't have Travels with Charley.

  4. Books are so seductive. I'm trying to downsize, boxing up books to donate yet there isn't a week go by that I don't add another volume or two that I just couldn't pass up...yesterday's was Twain's essays on travel.

  5. I'm with you, Studs Turkel really zeroed in on the common man (and woman). He made history come to life in a way few others have even tried. As for the dog, I think he had a bone to pick with Turkel who never collected the stories of canines.

  6. Great find, Birdman. I, too, am an admirer of Turkel's oral histories. WORKING is in my bedside pile.

  14. Birdman -- I'm with you -- one should not pass by a book sale. This one on the porch seems especially seductive. -- barbara

  17. It is difficult to impress a Golden Retriever. I speak with erudition and elegance and our Golden just curls up on the floor with her paws over her ears.

That's when I go to the bookstore. And often get lost for hours. One of my favorite places in the whole world.

  18. I guess the dog was bored of looking at books?

Thanks for your kind wishes - I send you a cyber piece of my cake today!

  19. I already have my bookshelves filled to capacity, yet I often go to the local Goodwill store(s) and find more. I have to stay out of Powell's in downtown, though, or I'd be in a really big bind 'cause I'd buy even more. There's no room in here, Lynette. Oh, well, if I saw a porch sale like this, I wouldn't be able to stop myself from at least looking.

About the Two Tarts, I'm not sure. I'll ask next time I visit their booth.
