Theme Day: Mailbox

Where are all the little Piggies? Today, May 1, 2011. is Theme Day across the CDPB (citydailyphotoblog) community. Knowing how Miss Piggy loves MEN, she probably thinks this is a MALEbox. hahaha One of my Dad's best friends, Jim Dailey, was our mailman on Stevens Avenue. Between 10 and 11 AM daily, Jim's heavy footsteps came across our long porch. It was like clockwork. He was always giving me a hard time too. No matter what I was doing. Even if it was just saying, "Hi, Jim." He'd always say something like, "Wait til I tell your father what you're up to now." Often, he'd stop over on a Sunday, and they'd share a Ballantine Ale or two. They were two of a kind, letter carriers, veterans and best friends.

  1. I always like reading about your childhood reflections. They seem so warm and full of love.

  2. And when he said, "wait til I tell your father..." did you feel a surge of guilt and recall the last bit of mischief you'd gotten into?

  3. This is extraordinary and I love the story that goes with it.

  4. Your description of "friends" knows no bounds. I like our mailman too but the days of front porches around here disappeared when our city allowed these California dream houses to be built here.

They were called "Ranch Houses" and while nobody is allowed to keep a horse in town, we all got a "corral" that everyone else in the world calls a "Family Room."

Mike walks on the sidewalk to get to our mail box just outside the front door. I would prefer a front porch. Spend many an hour under their roofs when I was growing up during World War II.

  6. This has got to be the coolest mailbox I've ever seen! Is Miss Piggy holding a whale? Funny gal.

  7. Now that is quite the mailbox embellishment!

  8. Nice story! This is certainly one of the stranger boxes I've seen. Must be a Muppets fan.

  9. Ha, I've never seen a mail box like this before! I would probably drive off the road from distraction if I were to pass this one.

  10. A piggy as a holder for the mailbox?! That's quite unique!
By the way, the previous post with "hanging stones" is also remarkably original!
    God bless you!

  11. this mailbox makes quite a statement. great story about your mailman and your dad. i don't even know who my mailman is anymore. they drive through, drop off the mail, and that is it, except for leaving me notes to trim my bushes by the mailbox or they will stop delivering mail

  12. You are probably right about Miss Piggy! Love the memories. We didn't know our mailman very well when we were growing up but, he was always there at the same time and always with a friendly smile. And, I must add, always neatly attired in his uniform.

  15. Nice story and great mailbox - somehow people don't have boxes like that in the city.

  17. This is another good tale about growing up as Birdman. And, so far Miss Piggy might win the prize for the theme day, but I still have more to see . . .

  18. Nostalgia: back in the day when letter carriers could support their families by themselves. The Miss Piggy thing is a little too weird. I wouldn't put my hand in there.

  19. Mr. Bird, so far you win! This one is a hoot and I am thinking that it does not belong to you...

Another great story... keep them coming!

  20. A great contribution to a long-ago era. One of my former teaching colleagues had Miss Piggy as one of her permanent students in her classroom. What a hoot!!
