Bus Stop

Schools open in the city today. My formal schooling began at Allen's Corner School and Perry Elementary School, both no longer standing. Then it was off to St. Joseph's Grammar School for six years, just a short 10 minute walk from our house. Lots of memories jump back at me. In Third Grade, I carried an antique butter churn up Stevens Avenue for a history project, and later in Fifth did a neat project on an explorer where we had to write a diary of their exploration. I chose Father Jacques Marquette. There were dark days too. In Sister Joanne's Sixth Grade adventure, I got in BIG trouble for opening Carol M's desk without her permission. I copied the dictionary after school. As I've stated many times... trouble finds me a lot!

  4. But look at all the great memories that trouble has evoked! I think yours was the good kind of trouble.

  5. Well, copying the dictionary doesn't seem to have caused any harm whatsoever. I wonder what you saw when you looked in that desk.

  6. I'm not exactly saying that it's good that you got into trouble a fair bit Birdman, but if you'd been a 'goody two shoes', this column wouldn't be quite as juicy...did I say column, hmmm! now there's an idea!!

As I recall, when you turned the pictures upside down on April Fools day in 6th grade caused a little concern by Sister Denise. I remember you carrying the antique butter churned up Stevens Ave. My scariest moment was when you were hit by a truck on Washington ave after getting off the bus in front of McLaughlins store.

  12. That's a rather novel punishment for a young rascal! New beginnings are always momentous, and I forgot to call my grandkids to wish them well!!
I'll make it up to them with a DQ treat after I return!

  18. I always lived too close to school to be able to ride the bus, so I usually had to walk. My high school was a block away from the beach, so it was a real temptation to skip classes sometimes.

  19. Our nuns were always making us write lines or whacking us with a pointer - there were consequences in those days!

  20. Hi There, I think teachers were alot stricter back then than they can be now... I remember some of our teachers taking 'bad' kids (not me of course---ha) in the Cloak Room for a good paddling... Seemed to work since discipline wasn't much of a problem back then.

  21. Bird, it seems that there are a few readers who can enlighten us on any impish moves you happen to omit. The dictionary? At least you are a good speller now!

I was never in a school bus; did I miss a lot?
Copying the dictionary sounds more like a reward than punishment.
