Going Up?

In the alleyway near one of the rear entrances to Portland High School, you find "The Ascent" by artist Thomas K. Kennedy commissioned by the school in 1991. In all the times I've passed it, I've been alone. It's not located in the most viewable location. Of course, days when school is in session I'm sure many teens pass it. I hope the symbolism is captured by them. I still need assistance in 'my' ascent. I think we all do, regardless of age, in our ongoing life learning. If this rain stops, I'll be ascending a ladder to continue painting the garage. What's on your docket for this fall Saturday?

  1. A lot of household organization is on my agenda today. Football and softball soak up the weekday time.

  5. I really like this sculpture and its message, even if the kids don't immediately understand it. Eventually they will. Today we are going to the wedding of the son of a friend from work. I am looking forward to it.

  6. Love the sculpture.

Today I am going to African drumming at 1, then at 4 we are going into Rochester to board the Mary Jameson for a cruise down the Erie Canal. (A birthday celebration for a friend).

  7. We are all trying, helping each other to ascend all our life.
The higher we might get up in our ascend, the more dangerous it is.. when we slip off and start falling down...

  9. Well, I won't be on a ladder painting my garage : ), but you're right, we never stop climbing the pyramid to self-actualization.

  10. Love this sculpture, birdman! Today - going out exploring - hoping to find a farmer's market or flea market - or just walk. Gorgeous day here. Don't fall off your ladder, y'hear?

  12. I really like this work. Strange that they put it in a place where it's not seen much by passers-by.

  13. Perfect sculpture for a High School sculpture with such a fantastic message, even if they don't seem to notice it the 'subliminal' message will sink in I bet! Welcomed a new baby into our family today, and went to a 'bon voyage' party this evening..was a good day!

  14. Your comment made me think how none of us are "self-made." We've had lots of assistance from the beginning. An extremely wealthy guy the other day was bragging about how he'd gotten that way all by himself. Not! He had purchased his property with a loan insured by the government; the roads leading to his business had been built by the government; the people protecting his place were government employees - police. Firemen and firewomen were on call at all times to stop his place from burning down. The bridges in his community which allowed trucks to carry his products were constructed by government entities. Etc.

Re your question about blindness: No, I didn't think you were blind but sometimes it's hard to see something staring us in the face.

Sheesh. You're so silly! But if you go up a ladder to paint be very careful. And if your phone rings don't fall down the rungs to answer it.

  16. That is a wonderful piece of art. I sure hope it is appreciated. Had to spend time in the Media Lab at the college today after that maybe a couple of Clint Eastwood films.

  17. I like the sculpture. I'm all for outdoor art and don't believe it should be only in museums.

  18. Cool photo of a brilliant sculpture. I join you wholeheartedly in hoping at least some of the students get its message. Today my two sons and I, along with some of their friends, celebrated the elder one's 36th birthday. Very special day. While we still miss their Daddy, who died way back in 1983, we believe he's always with us in spirit.
