Work Space

On her post this week SCreech photographed her laptop and a turtle companion. She also showed other pieces of her writing environment, including chocolate. It got me thinking about our work spaces and what we need to keep us company while we work. This is a shot of my home office desk. If you don't like clutter, please keep back behind the yellow police tape. Some items on the desk are obvious items I need nearby: pens, coffee, and laptop. Others might present no rhyme or reason. Assorted mini boxes, pipe rack, mini typewriter, metallic poetry pieces, rocks and a timepiece to just point out a few items that keep me company. Ya, that's a bobble-head. And yes, the stuff changes from time to time too. Comfort to some, clutter to others. It makes the process work, writing or otherwise.
What keeps you company at work?

  1. my cat, my rolodex, my phone, my lap top, a desk clock make by mr. brattcat, scrap paper, a stapler, sponge balls for my cat, eye drops, lip balm, a nail clipper, white out, pens and pencils, photographs, a music box, nail clippers for my cat, a stuffed paddington bear, a stuffed rabbit, a cloth to clean my glasses...anyway, you get the idea...your desk looks tidy indeed by comparison, creech's desk looks like it's straight out of home beautiful.

  2. I think your desk top doesn't look at all cluttered. I wouldn't DARE photograph mine at home...it's a mess, but it's my mess! Now that I'm in Santa Fe, my best companion is the neighbor's sweet dog who lies on the deck while I write inside on a small table next to the door. How I wish I could bring this one home with me. See her photo on my blog yesterday!

  3. Oh, I LOVE this! It's not clutter - it's well-chosen atmosphere. And I love seeing other people's spaces. LOVE it. Maybe I am nosy? I love all the doo-dads (the mini-typewriter, the small boxes, etc.

(and my horse has a companion. he was trying to figure out a way to get across the pond, come into the yard and eat birdseed...) :)

  8. Wonderful desk and I agree way to orderly compared to my desk. I have 2 cups of pen of all sorts, rocks I found of interesting shapes, favorite photos.... I always keep little hand toys around at work and at my home office.

  9. This looks much like the way I might have imagined your space. It is perfect for a man with a strong nostalgia streak. But, where are all the piles of paper? Don't you get bills? Don't you clip stuff from the paper and then not know where to file it, or whether to pitch it after a respectful waiting period?

My shot today was from high up in the stands, in the opposite corner of the end zone. It is also heavily cropped. I was amazed how much good detail remained after cropping out about 80 percent of the image.

  12. The most important accessory to the computer is coffee! Coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee, and more coffee...oh, and a coffee cup to put it in :^)

  13. Hey, Jack, all those papers you ask about? They are downstairs in 'my' space!!!! Oh yeah, I really don't have a 'space'. Everyplace is my space.

  14. I have all sorts of stuff laying around on two tables. I sometimes use the pens or other glasses or fiddle with the watches to see how much time they lost since the last time I set them with the atomic clock.

  15. I officially hate clutter, but in practice it is not that simple and I tend to be, well, flexible...

  18. I would say that my desk is much like yours. Things surround me that are necessary and there are things around me that are not necessary! However, my desk at work is worse!

  19. Blimey Birdman, i would have expected more mess in your workspace, not sure why! I have two work spots, a desk for the everyday business that Jack was talking about and a separate one for my blog. My blog space is a small table for my laptop, mouse and notepad, but the couch I sit on has a row of cameras plus a few lenses along the top, a French and English dictionary, a Thesaurus, numerous magazines and clippings, three hats, Winnie the Pooh, magnifying glass (??) set of tarot cards (??), phones, bag, and moi!and btw Birdman, the rusty bike light looks fantastic when you pull it in real close, rusted to the max!
