The Central Maine Railroad offices are on Cumberland Avenue. Before the demise of Union Station in the early Sixties, this was a hustling expanse of buildings. Today, this beautiful complex of brick and stone are all that remain of a bygone era, when steam locomotives were seen racing through intersections and lonesome whistles were heard restlessly awaking your dreams. Now, CMR offices are located in just a couple of buildings with doctors' offices, a restaurant and other establishments filling the others.
la luce rende questo edificio ancora piĆ¹ bello.

At least that still remains and wasn't torn down when the station was lost!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely old building! My great grandfather worked for the railroad on the east coast of Florida for many years and I used to love to hear his stories about the trains. I hope your recovery is going well.
ReplyDeleteA great looking old building. At least it is still in use and not razed or in disrepair.
ReplyDeleteWell, back... at least in some respects. I'm taking a look at all your kind thoughts and comments. bm
ReplyDeleteHey - - great to see you, Birdman . . . just take it slow.
ReplyDeleteI like this building and hope someone tries to get it designated as a "National Historic site" or some such designation to preserve it for continued reuse. It's on my list to take the "Downeaster" to Portland some day.
I really like the round parts I would like to see the inside. Glad you are back home and blogging again.
