Rigging

"Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me
We pillage, we plunder, we rifle, and loot
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot,
Drink up me ' hearties, yo ho."
A Pirate's Life for Me

If you've ever been to Disney World or Disneyland, you've probably taken the daring trip among the caverns of the ride "Pirates of the Caribbean". So even though this is some of the main rigging to the US Coast Guard's tall ship The Eagle docked at the the Maine State Pier last week, when I look skyward up the masts, I can't help but think pirates and this crazy melody comes to mind. Now,  I do believe, that the precursor to the motley crew that you experience on that pirate ride goes back to the early tale of Peter Pan, also made into a Disney movie, featuring Captain Hook and his gang of misfits. Both productions, the ride and the adaptation of the Barre novel were and still are big favorites of mine. So the next time I get to Disney, I'll head right to the "Pirates of the Caribbean", with maybe just a slight detour to experience "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride". Mom said, way back, I was her 'peter pan' ("You'll never grow up!"). She wasn't kidding.

  1. Tall ships are romantic visions of the legendary pirate's world. So much fun to see them at full sail.

  2. Eagle. It was German ship before the end of WWII, called Horst Wessel. It was on this ship that my grandfather became a sailor (it was, then, part of the sail training fleet of the Kriegsmarine). I have never seen Eagle in person but I have my grandfather's collection of photos...

Sorry to have made you unhappy about parking meters.
    Grin.

  4. Great shot. It's amazing how much rigging goes into one of these tall ships. Love the Disney rides too.

  5. Methinks you probably wouldn't have been happy to run into a real pirate back in the "good ol' days." They were not nice folks from Maine.

But, hey, we need you guys to come to Disney World and spend your money, so "Welcome to Florida, the haven for pirates and other nogoodniks!"

    Heh, heh!

  6. I have been only at Eurodisney, if this counts, but we get our fair share of tall ships in port. This one is really gorgeous!

  7. It has been a very long time since I've visited either Disneyland or Disney World and there was a time when we went at the very least once a year. I'll have to make a point of getting there again because that song is now stuck in my head. A little trip on the Jungle Cruise is always nice too.

  9. Love the structure in the photo from a purely abstract sense. I too loved/love Disney's Peter Pan & that ride...When I was a kid I organized my little neighborhood friends to put on a play based on Peter Pan...Love "I won't grow up", but that pirate song is kind of horrifying, no??

  10. Two of my favorite rides at Disney World! I was on Pirates of the Caribbean one time when it broke down though and we were stuck in there for almost an hour. I didn't go on it again for a long time after that!

  17. That's a wonderful song, and I've always been fascinated by the rigging of tall ships. My question is, "How does your inner cowboy get along with your inner pirate?" Both can be pretty rough.
