Peeling Paint
I really don't mind putting paint to brush, but I must admit I hate to scrape peeling paint in any shape or form. Taking a quick short cut the other morning, I went behind this abandoned gas station. It's still standing but hasn't been pumping petrol for almost ten years now. I wonder about the feasibility of a prime piece of real estate like this going dark for such a long period of a time. I've got to believe that the cost of removing the below ground storage tanks has something to do with it not having some sort of rebirth. After all, almost everything should get a second chance, even ugly gas stations.
Having been partly responsible for having to remove a below ground storage tanks and the required remediation of said tanks I can vouch not only for the cost but also the time required. Someone, methinks, could make a whole bundle of money by figuring out a less costly and perhaps more eco-friendly solution.
ReplyDeleteThis gas station looks like it would take lots of time and effort to convert to another business, and Revrunners comments certainly do not sound promising.

i saw recently where someone posted a gas station reno'd into a restaurant, turned out cool!
ReplyDeleteSometimes something just ain't worth the trouble. And I think you're right about the underground tanks. Don't eat the peeling paint!
ReplyDeleteThere's an old gas station in SoPo which I hear is going to become a pizza place. I think it's been determined though that the chemicals or tanks or something are still underground....Peeling paint, not my favorite to deal with either...
ReplyDeleteLove the abstract patterns of the deteriorating paint and wood in your photo. Old gas stations are one of my favorite subjects. They are so indicative of an earlier time in American history.

ReplyDeletei'd do better doing outdoor paint work than indoor. yeah, taking out those ground storage tanks can't be easy or cheap!
ReplyDeleteRemoving those tanks is very expensive, I hear, But the peeling pain makes an artsy photo. :))
ReplyDeleteI am fine with painting, but, like you, I really don't like scraping old paint. I am too impatient for that.
ReplyDeleteAnd, yes, removing old underground tanks is very expensive. But, if the site is good enough, someone will decide that the cost is worth it.
I'll scrape you paint. I don't have the patience for it. Probably why I am a photographer and not a painter.
