Snow Stack

One of my fall wood stacks is all but covered after the last few storms. It's a pretty significant pile, but it looks like nothing these days. I'm not worried about it now. It's part of my summer work. Whether it was Stevens Avenue or Coyle Street, we seemed to be the only house that had a wood stove cranking in the winter. I always wondered about that, but the wonderful warmth of the kitchen soon dispelled those thoughts. Dad even tried coal for a few years. Anything to save a buck. Back then or even now a pretty good credo to follow.

  1. What's that? Anything to save a buck? Send that memo to our son, please. He seems to have misplaced his memo.....

  2. What a pleasing photo, all those graceful lines/arcs/circles.
Today we heard a robin and saw a cardinal. Granted we're further south than you are but it does signal. . .spring will come . . .

  3. This will be a good reminder for you when you're chopping wood in the summer heat. I really like the birdhouse hanging over the snow covered logs.

  6. A wood pile covered in snow makes a very nice photograph.
When I was little, we had a coal furnace and I remember how the truck used to pull up in alley beside our house and drop a load of coal through one of those small basement windows. And, I remember my dad shoveling that coal into what looked to me like Dante’s inferno inside the furnace door. I remember these little slats on the furnace door and you could slide it open and peek in at the fire inside. When we converted to natural gas, it wasn't anyway near as exhilarating.

  9. When your wife weighs in with a strong comment early, I believe my response is, I agree with her! My mother didn't raise no fools.

  12. Sometimes I think our wood stove is as much for the comfort it provides as the cost savings.

  13. We have a propane gas fireplace these days and we have been using it regularly this winter.

  14. One of the many reasons I hated being a Boy Scout was that they made us go camping in the winter and we and all our clothing came back stinking of wood smoke. Not for city slickers. Do they make wood stoves now so that the heat stays in and all the smoke goes out?
