'Bear' Minimum

In our years here we've seen a lot of wildlife wander here and there out back. Deer, fox, woodchucks, owls, a giant hog, raccoons, wild turkeys, skunks, a horse(wild?), Elenka claims she had a monkey in her backyard, but that was in Jersey. This has been the scene each of the last two mornings at our birdfeeders. My first reaction was that we had a bear, but Elenka did some research, emailing a wildlife researcher and finding out that it was probably raccoons causing the mischief. Too bad. I was all excited that we had a bear-drama on our hands. I'll keep you posted.

  1. You forgot to mention that killer spider.

We have spider alerts in our house. I spot 'em, Birdman deals with them.

They are in the wildlife category in my book.

  3. I guess you will have to set up camp in the garden now, so you won't miss the next raccoon/bear visit!

  4. Speaking of bears, here's a poem for you!!

    March

    by James Wright

    A bear under the snow
    Turns over to yawn.
It's been a long, hard rest.

Once, as she lay asleep, her cubs fell
    Out of her hair,
And she did not know them.

    It's hard to breathe
    In a tight grave:

    So she roars,
    And the roof breaks.
    Dark rivers and leaves
    Pour down.

When the wind opens its doors
    In its own good time,
The cubs follow that relaxed and beautiful woman
    Outside to the unfamiliar cities
    Of moss.
