Sheding Light

Somewhere between my First Communion and my Confirmation I had to memorize the 10 Commandments found in My First Catechism. One of my many Sisters of Mercy thought it was the right thing to do, to instill these 10 items into my brain. Some of them were easy: "Thou shall not kill". Some not so much: "Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's wife" and, "Thou shall not commit adultery". I remember the boys and girls in that room all were looking around at each other with the looks of having been hit in the head by 2x4s. Bewilderment was the vocabulary word of that day. Pretty heavy stuff for a little guy who just wanted to go catch pollywogs after school.
Heck, even today a couple of them are still pretty scary!

  3. That's right. Those 2 you referred to should be the scary ones for you.

Good job, Sisters of Mercy. ;-)

  4. Those sisters were good at making you memorize but, not so good at explaining what it was you were memorizing.

  5. I remember those days too. But memorize we did but the explanations about puzzling things were few. I can spout off the ten to this day and yes some are still scary. the Sisters were great at making us memorize but we learned nonetheless.
Love the typewriter. Reminds me of school and I did take typing and I got pretty good too but I still use the two finger hunt and peck method. Well not then but now.

Here is a great link on the litte but mighty Sauk River.

  6. And the easy one seems most difficult to keep if you have a look around the world.

  7. The message of Moses is clear; too bad we don't hear clearly sometimes.

  8. Let's hear it for tradition and the occasions when you can tie one on!

  9. Yeah, I didn't understand a lot of it, either, but they sure made it sound serious. I wasn't much into sinning after that. The worst I could come up with at confession was fighting with my brother or calling him names, mostly hail Mary penances.

  10. But Birdman, you haven't seen my neighbor's wife. After carefully reading your post, I can assure you that you should not be afraid of pollywogs. One is much like another.

  11. Fortunately, my neighbors' wives generally have not been especially crave worthy. See why I try to stay anonymous?

  14. I always got a ruler to the knuckles from our Sisters. They just couldn't see the angel in me. :-)

  15. Agreed. And memorizing them and their interpretations/explanations added to the pleasure!
