Pine Needles

Pictured here a week or so ago is a stretch of tall pines just off Route 88 or Foreside Road. Off in the distance is a piece of the 11th fairway of the Portland Country Club. Built in 1895, this Donald Ross designed course is the only private facility in Maine certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary by Audubon International. I walked around for awhile looking for any wayward balls. I found none but was almost overcome by the strong, aromatic workout for my olfactory nerves that the fallen needles provided.
It's the height of the fall season around here. We're heading to a Pumpkin Festival nearby.
Photos at 11.
Enjoy your Saturday.
Ours will be in brilliant sun.

  1. Ha! You must have better golfers than those near me. I find them all the time. In fact, I give them to the neighborhood children to sell them back to the golfers. :-)

  3. Sorry you didn't find any golf balls. This is a beautiful scene though. I can almost smell the pine from here.

  10. People have been putting pumpkins out on their porches and the squirrels are nibbling away at them leaving these bizarre-looking things.
You should visit Lowell in FLA now that you are retired!

  12. Maybe the chipmunks and squirrels are stealing the golf balls.

  13. Your pine forests look very different from our evergreens here (lots of cedars and firs mixed with pines here). Do let us know if you encounter the Great Pumpkin. S/he is known to be quite social this time of year.

  15. I used to work next door to that pine grove at the little Montessori school. One time we (K students) built a mini village using the pine needles & other stuff. Good memories. I also love Mackworth. How i would have liked to have gone to the Bean pumpkin fest.

  16. Such a beautiful place and such a beautiful photo, Birdman. My course in Hartford is a Ross design, although it has been extensively modified since he worked on it. And, down here is Naples I live on the sixteenth hole of a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
