The 'scary time' is almost upon us.
No, not All Hallows Eve.
No, not Day/Night of the Dead.
No, it's not all the viewing of all the themed movies, for example: "Frankenstein", "Dracula", "Psyhco", "The Night of the Living Dead", "Halloween", "The Haunting of Hill House" and one of my all time favorites "The Tingler". No, my friends not any of those. This is the scariest of all, at least in this state. What is it?
Well, ELECTION DAY!
So scary that no one will be allowed to leave the voting booth in the last 10 minutes on November 4.
Two issues have really riled up the natives in the state: the race for Governor and Question #1 Bear Baiting. First: Will the embarrassing statements, vetoes and acts of our dear Governor Lepage keep piling up? Don't bet against it. A couple of 'lightweights' opposing him. At least it'll be a 'fun' next 4 years. Second: Bait or not bait bears with jelly donuts or run them up trees with dogs before shooting them. By the way, it's not cruelty being debated here by some. It's the pure economics of the bear guides and what they bring into the economy of this state and their loss of income. I've lived in Maine all my life. I don't hunt, but I see no problem with it. It's the way of the world up here. But, in my mind, out-of- staters (statistics show80% of bear kills come from outside our state) luring bears with sweety cakes and donuts and catching them in leg irons and executing them is a bit much.
What it is I don't know.
But it ain't hunting!
I'm voting "yes" to stop the practice.
*btw I had two jelly donuts yesterday, and they WERE delicious!
I'd be careful where I ate those donuts, if i were you, Birdman. :-)
ReplyDeleteAlthough I come from a family of generations of fishing and hunting, it has never appealed to me. We don't really need the food for basic sustenance any more, so what is the point? It looks like your autumn is coming to a close. Scarier to me than politics is the winter weather!!
ReplyDeleteNow we have Scary Time too, Halloween is quite fashionable here now, but sadly it wasn't when I was a kid!
ReplyDeletei saw the bear baiting headline on msn but didn't read what that meant. thanks for explaining it. it surely doesn't feel right.
ReplyDeleteI just heard about that resolution on NPR earlier this week. I'm with you. I'd vote to stop that too.
ReplyDeleteLove the photo! I agree with you about stupids coming in from the outside and killing bears. Sheesh. Your governor, methinks, should be put aboard a ship and be sent sailing off to the netherlands, wherever they might be. Just don't send him to Florida, we've got enough nogoodniks and kooks down here to last several lifetimes!
ReplyDeleteGuess more than one of us followed this on NPR this week. You're right, of course, it's not hunting, any more than is the practice of drugging lions so they won't run away and people can shoot them. Don't know if there is a word for this kind of sadism, but it ain't hunting.
ReplyDeleteThat certainly does not rate as hunting.
ReplyDeleteHow "brave" of "hunters" to tempt bears with donuts and then shoot them. Very manly!! NOT.
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed that one would have to vote...
ReplyDeleteWow, Birdman. You live dangerously! Did you have a look around before you bit into those donuts?
ReplyDeleteI think you nailed the terms correctly. The bear lures and such amount more to execution than hunting. Hunting is not a lazy person's sport and it's not entrapment.
Nice shot. It's coming here too.
ReplyDeleteYou have had some wackos up there. But then there was Olympia Snow.
ReplyDeleteOMG I remember seeing The Tingler in a theater. Almost wet my pants.
I have never heard of bear baiting. Is it legal to shoot the baiters?
ReplyDeleteThat whole bear thing is Scary...I'm voting yes too...I don't get the cruelty at all. Like you, I'm not a hunter, but accept it, but not this bear baiting...So, you're saying 4 more years of LeP.? I'm hoping for Michaud with my one teeny vote.
