Earl's Passing

Early Saturday morning in off and on rainy mist, Old Orchard Beach, near Atlantic Avenue, was hardly deserted. There were plenty of wave watchers, coffee drinkers and old men luggin' metal detectors, even at 6:45 AM. Earl was a dud, at least around here. Some rain, some wind and big, curling waves--- that was about it. The largest damage incurred was to local and cable weather anchors' fragile egos. I love it!

  1. I love your comment about the "weather anchors." My husband and I say that at the beginning of hurricane season here on the Gulf Coast, the forecasters start "frothing at the mouth" over the possibility of a big one! Not us of course.

  2. Boy, you got that last part right. I've a feeling that our weather folks pray for hurricanes!

    Beautiful shot!

  4. I think the media goes overboard about everything. Hype!! Exaggeration! One could go one. I judge the weather by looking out side and seeing what's going on. And I am glad Earl missed. LOL

  7. As Kurt Vonnegut wrote (and he might have said it about those weather guys, had he known them), "Busy, busy, busy."

My parents lived in Old Orchard Beach when I was born (they had to scamper off to Biddeford to find a hospital), many decades ago. I often wish I could see what it looked like back then... Don't you have one of those time travel buttons on your camera?

  8. Birdman, thank you for the link to the historic Old Orchard Beach postcards. The link will be perfect for my family history blog, Remember. It's like you DO have a time travel button on your camera!

  16. Nice capture. Although they should be, I doubt any egos were bruised. TV weather folks are just concerned about feeding the beast.
