Books and Music

Dylan, Beatles, Stones, cowboys, classic author or two, a worst case scenario edition and even an old science book thrown in for good measure, that a quick look a section of a bookcase in the den. Interesting how the vertical authors are sort of sandwiched by music. Although this section really has no rhyme or reason to its placement, when I take a step back it becomes a bit symbolic of me. An immeasurable piece of my heart and soul centers around writers and music. Hawthorne's Marble Fawn holds a special place in my library, and who can forget those Sunday nights when Ed Sullivan finally streaked his outstretched arm to the left and yelled, the Beatles... to the screaming masses. I must admit, while others concerned themselves with Lennon and McCartney, it was George, 'the quiet one' that piqued my interest. And the night the Stones hit the stage, in their sweaters, as opposed to the Beatles suits and ties, I was struck by the utter aloofness of Keith, standing in a world of his own. At first glance, a seemingly haphazard placement of books, really helps reveal a bit about who I am. Now, Dylan's words and music... I'd need another page.

Trombone Noise

I wish I could play a musical instrument. Never really got the chance. Back in seventh grade I had my window. Lincoln Junior High School had a marching band, and I wanted in. I had no interest in sitting in a band room and playing. I wanted to march in parades! I had my mind and heart set on the trombone. It made a lot of noise, and that was a big selling point. All us guys had a plan. We took all the papers home to our parents to sign up and where and when to rent. There was Buddy, Leo, Skipper, Eddie, and in no particular order there were drums, trumpets, tubas, clarinets to play. Well, bottom line-- we were shutout, all of us! It wasn't in the cards, I guess. So my dreams of wearing that bright blue and gold marching uniform at Saturday parades and football games were dashed that day. No problem. I lived with it.

Back to the here and now--
Tonight, we have tickets to The Moody Blues at Merrill Auditorium at 8PM. We've seen them quite a few times but always under summer skies. We are really looking forward to hearing them in Merrill with those acoustics.

Southside Soundcheck

Was it a calm before the storm? Hardly! Last night, a little bit of Jersey came to Maine. It was, indeed, a gorgeous evening with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes pounding out number after number under the stars. We got to the site about 5 and were lucky enough to catch the soundcheck. It was quite a cool experience. I asked for a quick picture with Southside, and he graciously obliged. We've seen the Jukes many times, and I must agree with Elenka(Jersey girl). It was one of the best. The warm night, the tunes, the hilarious banter back and forth with audience and the man was the perfect cocktail needed. Favorite selections of the evening for me were the crowd favorite "Walk Away Renee", "Umbrella in my Drink" and "Nothing But a Heartache". Now, we prepare for the wind and battering rain of Irene, but with a wonderful soundtrack to hum away the hours with, while fortifying the homestead. Music! Music! Music!
