Industrial Design

This photograph is just plain riveting to me. Sorry, I couldn't resist that pun. What they call this, I do not know. However, this I know. It's found on top of lumber mills. When I climbed up on Nana's sink and looked straight off in the distance, I saw a large one atop the Saunders Brothers mill in Westbrook. Then in our neighborhood, there was Lewis Lumber Company, and it had two sticking out of the rambling roofs. Back then, it was a day without gates keeping kids out, so at night we often explored the buildings, inside and out, and discovered lots of interesting stuff. It was great fun til that Sunday night when a frightening fire took it down. I found this piece of industrial design at an abandoned warehouse in the city. A remnant of another time.
