Four Windows

I like to play mind games with myself during some moments to pass the time. Looking through my favorite catalogs, I say to myself. If I could have one item on this page, what would it be? That wildly designed shirt? Those expensive shoes? Wow! How about that unique watch? Price doesn't enter the equation. Have fun, but keep the credit card at bay. Another game I like to play is called "Pick a House". In this time passer, I pick a street I'm driving or walking down. I can go in any house or apartment and wander around to take in the 'sights'. Which one would it be? The small, narrow walkup with interesting nooks and crannies, the sprawling oceanside estate high above the rocks below or maybe the interesting home on the Hill with a cupola or intriguing bay windows flushed with morning sunlight eyeing the city.
Ya, I'm busy, but from time to time, I need to fill 2-3 moments of idle time. How about you?
Do you have any innocent games you play to fill fleeting minutes... that you would reveal?
Be brave!
Beware the snickers!
And I'm not talking milk chocolate and tasty peanuts here.

  1. I'd like to know how they trained that tree to creep around and not over those windows.

  2. I also do the house thing. Quite a lot, I must admit.

  3. Hi Birdman. What you describe is a process that makes us social. We are able to "take the role of others" by seeing what it would feel like to be someone else. This process is a kind of empathy allowing us to project ourself, and letting us reach out to others in appropriate ways. You may think about this as a game, but it is an ability that creates the glue that holds society and relationships together. It can, as you describe, also be fun.

  4. Oooooo, those games sound fun. I am especially interested in architecture and love to see how people flavor their homes. By the way, I love the colored pencil shot and the lobster boat. You sure have some great subject matter in your neck of the woods.

As for what my horses listen to on the radio...this morning it was classical. They also like the jazz station and country once in awhile. What kind of music do you like?

  6. I thought I was the only one who did that with catalogs. I especially liked the Neiman Marcus Christmas catalog although I will admit, there were pages where I couldn't imaging purchasing anything on the page even if I could.

  7. The closest I can come must be "virtual photography" - how would I have shot a photo wherever I happened to be and had brought a camera.

  9. Have you ever had an MRI of your brain? I think they'd find a time machine, a game machine, and a machinations machine. Not that those are bad things. Just very interesting.

I like old houses and I would love to be able to wander about in some of them, but I don't play games about it. I'm too busy on the golf course!

  10. I have enjoyed wandering happily around your blog. Very nice and interesting! Thank you for visiting me in Coventry. Mind games? Not lately for me...but I enjoy reading yours and all of the above.

  11. Idle time like when you are waiting for a friend to meet you or for visitors coming to your home -- that is when I feel the most idle -- and it is when I just sit and listen to trees, birds, dogs barking, voices, cars and wind if there is any -- all of this if I am outside.

  12. Love that you let us inside the 'idle moments' of your mind (which is never idle, it seems) . . .when I have those minutes, I guess I am doing the 'what-if' scenarios . . . 'what if that boat flipped over?' 'what if this car could fly?' 'what if that horse could talk?' etc.

  13. I spend the occasional few minutes the way you expect I would, Birdman.

  14. Sure. Everybody does, if they're honest. My internal pastimes include:

    - worrying about business

    - wishing I were a little older and could retire, then thinking about what I'd do with all that time.

    - kicking myself for spending too much time with photography and not reading nearly enough.

    - fuming about the Republican Party.

    - second-guessing yesterday's Cardinals game.

I could go on and on.

  15. Well, I do the house dream like you and have since I was a child. The guilty pleasure is driving the streets at night an seeing into the houses. I am not looking at people, but at the architecture, the art, the decor...

  18. I, too, imagine living in certain houses. More often, I carry on silent conversations in preparation for the real thing spoken aloud later in my day.

  19. Imagining...a great game! Yesterday I walked around LL Bean imagining what I might buy with my $10 off coupon. Couldn't find a thing, but it was fun to look!

  20. One of my favorite games is what if I were rich. How would I split up the money. How would I give it to those in need, real need. I tend to get too technical on the latter part and not giving it away because I don't trust anyone to be honest....then I wake up and........I wait for the next dream to start it all over. Oh how I wish I were rich and could give this not real money away so I could start another dream.
