Afternoon Drenching

And the rains came...
It used to be fun, surviving an afternoon thunder and lightening storm with my arms stretched toward the heavens, standing in the middle of our backyard baseball diamond. Rain pelting down, soaking every single inch of a twelve year old's body. Was it my little way to say, "You can't hurt me"? I'd race through the breezeway and shed into the kitchen shaking in total wetness. Truly, every inch of my body wringing wet. In the middle of the kitchen Mom had only one word for me. "Strip"! I immediately took everything off right down including my 'tighty whities', which were soaked and dripping too, and left them in a haphazard pile on the linoleum. Uncontrollably shivering, I raced up the back stairs to my bedroom and jumped under the covers to dry, still amid the flashing of lightening bolts in my window and the pounding torrential rain over my head
True story.
"You can't hurt me"?
I'm smarter now.

  1. Reminds me of a photograph hanging on the wall in the rental where I'm staying. Evidently the little boy of the family that owns the place must have come in filthy one day from the beach. :-)

  4. It happened to my kid brother and me: mom wasn't happy, dad quietly laughed in the other room...

  5. I remember being out in the rain at that age revelling in getting drenched. These days I'm more like a cat- I hate being out in the rain!

  7. It's a good thing we get smarter as we get older or maybe we just get more fearful!

  8. I love a good drenching in the rain (under the right circumstances). We don't thunderstorms here in Europe as often as back in North America where I grew up.

  9. No thunder or lightning here today. Rain, yes. Started early and was to be tapering off by 5.....still raining. It forgot the tapering off part. I've had to mow every 5 to 7 days this summer, last year we pretty much stopped half way through June going ten to twelve days between mowing.

    1. I'm mowing about every 7 os so. That should taper this month.

  10. I loves me a good storm. The rain coming down so hard that you can't see across the street. Oh yes!

  11. You were lucky not to be hit by lightening. For those outside during stormy weather the risk is very real. Woke to rain this morning.

  12. It looks like your lawn and garden are getting a good drenching; better to be inside looking out now rather than being outside.

  13. Would give anything to see one of those downpours you posted about today. Here in Oregon we have not had rain since May. Everything is as dry as toast. You were a brave boy to stand out in the lightning, brave but not sensible young man. -- barbara

  15. My own son has done much the same, with the direct order of, "strip", right there in the mudroom.

  16. If it is not lightening I love sitting on the back porch during a rain storm. I don't like getting wet any more though.

  17. I lament the shortness of summer but wouldn't mind a good drenching here about now. DH stopped having to mow about a month ago, probably as early in the season as it's yet been.

  20. I'm glad to know you are smarter now. Lightning can be frightening! But I do enjoy being out in a light rain, in part because I have naturally curly hair. lol

  21. Rain is to be cherished from the comfort and safety of a porch.
