Isolation

Isolation: I'd love to try. Could I survive though? Being by myself. I love it! I hate it! I have a dream of spending one year on an isolated island, just me and a lighthouse perhaps. I think I could survive, but I'm really not sure. Sheeesh! I've been basically alone since July 13th, and I've had my moments. Ya, there have been afternoons of music played at high volume, while I worked at something. Dinners with friends and other days of working on projects around the house have filled time. I've been alone before, but this has been the longest stretch. And I'm in no way experiencing anything close to isolation, but it has been lonely at times. Could I do it for 365 days in a row, without any human contact. I'd like to say I could. I'd honestly would like too give it a try. I think I could occupy my time, but mentally it would be a gigantic mountain to surmount.
Could I give up a year of my life?
Could I be without family and friends?
Could I do it?

  4. I think you would like to be able to do it. But how could you, with the good Wife waiting over on the mainland?

Part of the 9-month apprenticeship at The Carpenter's Boat Shop in Pemaquid used to be (hopefully is still) is to be put ashore on a small uninhabited island, alone, for a weekend. It was called W.H.I.S.P.E.R. but I don't remember what that stands for. I was looking forward to it after I was accepted in the late 90s, but then a friend got sick and I could not go away to Maine. The director, Rev. Bobby Ives, retired this month. Sorry to see him leave after 33 years of great work.

  5. You could do it, I bet, but people would miss you.

  10. But would having the Internet actually qualify you for isolation? I think not, and that's a lot to give up.

  14. Wow, you've thrown out a lot of questions to make one ponder. I too enjoy being alone and have even traveled on my own before but, after a while I do crave company. You've really given me something to think about.

  15. Even Thoreau trucked into town to have dinner with friends when he was at Walden's Pond. I don't know about a human being solely alone -- couldn't cheat with a cell phone. -- barbara

  16. Lovely spot to ponder such questions. Don't know if I could do 365...but imagine what you could produce/be/think in that time!

  17. There's a book by a chap who left the Wall Street Journal and now spends five months in the national forest in a lookout tower as a fire watcher. "Living alone at 10,000 feet, miles from the nearest road, on the edge of a 200,000 acre wilderness area provides endless spectacles out my tower windows."

You reminded me to order the book.

  20. A whole year? Too much of a good thing, I'd say. Balance, that's what we all need... Knowing you only thru your blog, I don't think you'd like it.

  23. Why would you want to?

I'm with Kate. You'd go nuts. You need people, places and things to interact with and think about and get mad and glad at.

But, hey, if you want to give it a try, more power to you. Would you still be blogging? I'd send you lots of emails about fantastic restaurants, movie theaters, ice cream parlors ... well, you get the picture... :-)
