Tall Weeds

Some call them flowers; I call 'em wild weeds. Flower or weed: Queen Anne's Lace is delicate and beautiful. I'm posting this image today, because these are the tallest ones I have ever seen.  This particular morning these beauties, topping off at about 5 feet tall, were gently swaying in a smooth breeze and bright sunshine. It was fun to stumble upon this 'find'. Walking in a field of wildflowers and such always brings forth a very distinctive aroma, especially on very warm days. It takes me back to wide-open spaces of younger days. What aroma takes you back?

  2. Flower aromas are wonderful, but the odor that "takes me back" is the smell of baking bread or chocolate chip cookies.

  3. We've got these all across Ontario. I think the correct term is "native species". ;)
Whatever you call them, I rather like Queen Anne's Lace.

  4. The smell of hot bitumen always opens a memory for me. I think I shall blog about that very early memory.

  5. My grandfather used to smoke a pipe and there is a certain pipe tobacco smoke that will bring all kinds of fond memories rushing back.

  6. An aroma that takes me back? Hmmm. Well, the other day I stood in line with an older lady who had not bathed in a week or two but tried to cover it with a flowery perfume. Now that aroma took me back! Way back! To the end of the line! Whew!

Speaking of flowers, I think I may have told you that I was the flower of my family. Well, that's not the way they put it; they said I was a bloomin' idiot!"

Have a nice and aroma-free weekend!

  11. I've always loved the look of Queen Ann's Lace, but don't think it has any scent. They grew around our house when I was a kid. Great find.

  13. For me it's Mud. When I was a kid we would pull up the tall grasses with big mud balls on the bottom and throw them at each others forts.

  14. Weeds are just flowers in everyday clothes. Or another way of saying it is: Flowers are just weeds in Sunday clothes!

  15. For me it's the smell of the first rain when it hits the ground, always takes me straight back to when I was young growing up in central Africa. How we loved it when it rained!!

  17. As I read your post and looked at the photo, I recalled the scent of Queen Anne's lace -- not a "pretty" perfume like the honeysuckle that means childhood summer evenings to me -- your "wild weed" has a wild and weedy, a tangy scent, in my memory.

  18. I really like this angle and perspective. Looking upward does wonders, and in this case the subject is already appealing.

  19. We even have Queen Anne's lace here in Texas. But it's long gone already.
