Red Room

I'm thinking The Shining this morning looking down this long hallway from a red glowing room. If you've seen the movie version of the book, you'll remember the scene. Redrum, Redrum! That little guy on his tricycle headed for trouble. It's one of my favorite, quirky movies. Like The Godfather, The Wizard of Oz, Five Easy Pieces, and the Guns of Navarone (don't ask), if I run across it while I'm spinning the remote, I have to stop and watch a few minutes of it. Sometimes, I'll watch it till the end. These are the ones that come quickly to mind. There are a few others. For me, it's hard to understand the draw they have on me.  I'll stop myself in midstream and for a few minutes take a detour, regardless of what I'm up to. Is this just me? Anyone else do this? What movies?

    1. Last year we started a new Christmas Eve tradition. Take-out pizza (hang out at the bar and have a beer while waiting for the pizza to be ready) while watching a scary movie. Our choice for the first movie in this tradition? The Shining, of course. Very scary. Not a big Stephen King fan (even though we went to the same high school - eleven years apart), but I love that movie! I read the book the same summer that I read Helter-Skelter. Don't think that I slept much that summer!

    2. If that's what you do on Christmas Eve, I can only imagine what you guys must do on All Hallow's Eve! (Don't even tell me!)

  3. Shining is too scary for me; But I saw Annie Hall around 18 times, Manhattan 25, Indiana jones (1st one) maybe40 times, and for all kinds of versions of Jane Eyre, I don't count anymore; (and I'm not speaking about french films, you maybe would not know them)

  4. Oh yes, there are two or three movies that will grab me like that. Russia House is one of them.

  5. The Shining creeped me out, but I do watch parts of it (with all the lights on) when I come across it.

  7. I read King's books because we were classmates & neighbors in college...was closed to horror until The Shining which I LOVED. I never could like the film as much as the book though...but Misery, that's one of the few movies that to my mind was equal to the book. Your photo, a bit scary, blood red...I don't have a remote or TV, but do have movies that draw me to watch them over & over...

  9. Love that red room, bien sûr! My husband always watches a bit of Roadhouse (Patrick Swazy) when he runs across it. I think that it is just about the most repeated film or maybe it is just because he likes it.

I loved the Shining but having read almost all of his books, the intensity is just a bit much for me. I like a bit of a scare but not one that will give me nightmares!

  10. I'm not a fan of horror films, but love watching movies, especially old movies. Films that I stop and watch all or part when I come across them are any film by David Lean ( eg. Lawrance of Arabia), many John Wayne films (The Alamo, McClintock, Comencheros), almost anything with Jack Nicholson, or Shawn Connery, and too many more to mention.

  11. That's a hell of a picture, dramatic and ominous. I'm assuming it wasn't painted red since the clock face and floor have the same color. It this the room where the principal sends annoying students to drive them completely mad?

  13. I will not reveal some of the movies, but 'The Godfather' is surely one of those, 'The Natural' is another, 'The Last Boy Scout' one more...

  14. I've seen Sleepless in Seattle at least 10 times, but if I flick over and it's on, somehow my finger just has no power to change the channel, love it..There's quite a few fav French movies also, but some are a bit risque so I won't mention them haha!
