I don't know about all of you out there who garden, but for us it was probably our best crop of tomatoes ever. I made one wicked good batch of homemade tomato soup last week and we've been 'working on it' since then. Delicious, if I do say so myself. I make it in double batches and plan another this morning. Seems a bit strange, but we've been eating these like candy. I like them pretty simple: sliced with salt, pepper and a little dash of basil flakes. Somedays, I get a bit feisty and throw together some sliced cucumbers, sliced tomatoes and vinegar.
Now, that's a happy snack or lunch!
*On a side note: Derek Jeter(19 years Yankees), Ann Compton(40 years White House correspondent) and Birdman (41 1/2 years at BEMS) all retiring in the same year?
Now that's a powerful trinity!
I can't help myself!
Hehehehehehehehe!
I also like them simple, sometimes even with only pepper... By the way, they look gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWish I had the same results but I have no-one to blame but myself. I usually plant in pots in spring, do nothing and then am amazed that the harvest is so minimal. I should take lessons from you. . .only in that area. Based on your childhood, perhaps the other "lessons" might lead me into dangerous territory. Your description of how you eat the tomatoes makes my mouth water. Guess I'll have to rely on our Saturday Farmers Market instead of my gardening skills.
ReplyDelete:)
ReplyDeletei don't like raw tomatoes, but love 'em sauced and cooked.
Love those bright reds and greens, those fresh veggies, those yums . . . xx
ReplyDeleteA tomato salad in summer is THE best thing ever, and really with anything, had two big juicy tomatoes myself tonight, yours look very moreish Birdman.
ReplyDeleteThat has to be the most delicious photo I've seen in ages. When I was growing up in Illinois, we used to buy a bushel basket of tomatoes at the farm stand and mom would make all kinds of things. But, my all time favorite was a simple tomato sandwich, Roman Meal bread, butter, sliced tomatoes, salt and pepper. Pure heaven.
ReplyDeleteI love a good tomato soup. Any left to share? :)
ReplyDeleteI should eat so well. :-)
ReplyDeleteI add some drops of olive oïl . What a beautiful harvest !Things always taste better when you make them grow in your own garden !
ReplyDeleteI add balsamic vinegar and a bit of feta cheese!
ReplyDeleteI like them as part of a dish, but not really on their own.
ReplyDeleteTomatoes with salt, pepper, a little dash of extra virgin olive oil and basil. That'll do for me.
ReplyDeleteLovely! Your fellow retirees are in good company!
ReplyDeleteThis is just the season for home grown tomato treats. I've been making caprese salad with my deck grown tomatoes.
ReplyDeleteYou know....this is the year of the garden. Have never seen such amazing produce.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful bounty.
ReplyDeleteSomeone do all the gardening for us, we just pick them up in the groceries !
ReplyDeleteBeing retired is the best isn't it? Those tomatoes look so good. I wish I could have a garden, but I have too many squirrels, raccoons, and bunnies who would all have a heck of a feast before I could even get to it!
ReplyDeleteMmmm/ Sounds like you're eating healthy!
ReplyDeleteStir a little basil pesto into that soup if you really want a treat. (I'll spare the details of my self-imposed tomato crop failure. But my huge beets and the delicata squash are compensating.)
