Service Time

Neighborhoods change a lot over the years. Heck, Elenka is still not allowed to drive through her old neighborhood in Jersey. Most of Maine is not that dangerous. This used to be an all service Shell Service Station, as it used to be called. At the corner, there were six, count them 6, gas stations back then. The most expensive gas was found here at the Shell. Beside providing you the expense of the gas, the feller that cleaned your windows and checked your oil was impeccably dressed in brown shirt and pants with the bright yellow piping around the edges. The station was the cleanest of them all too, with every item for sale or ready for use in its place. And unlike many of the other stations, the cord that signaled that a car had just pulled in for attention, with a loud 'ding', always was in working order.
Today, I'd pull in there for gas; however, I think I'd have to pass on their tattooing and piercing services.
Besides, in my own mind, I'm famous already.

  3. You reminded me of the old bell at the gas stations. Now it's fast gas, not a ritual of caring for your car. Yes, so grateful for the safety & security we have here. Tatooing: I've never seen the place in your photo, but there were so many tattoing places in Quebec City. No tattoo for you, then?

  4. Shouldn't the sign read Tattoo and Pierce? Or maybe that would sound too much like a law firm on Fantasy Island.

  5. Ah yes, how times change...the description of the old Shell Station was awesome. I could just hear the 'ding' :) It'd be fun if the tattoo guy/gal inside Almost Famous was impeccably dressed in the brown shirt with the yellow piping...

  11. Well, my only other memory of the station was that you could see the SHELL station sign from our back yard. I remember one of the older guys, I believe it was Leo, while awaiting our next baseball game, sitting on the ground on a slight hill in our yard, there used to be a telephone pole hiding the "S" in the station name and Leo, attempting to educate us on words and life, offered us the new word which later that day became part of our vocabulary from that day forward. I was only 8 or 9 years old and thought that was a cool thing to realize. It was not cool with Mom or Dad who quickly squelched that word.

  12. The only filling station in Tungelsta closed years ago, but it will open very soon again this time as a Gulf station. And we do have at least one place for tattoos.
