Get Lucky

In our backyard, there's a remnant of a large barn foundation. Go digging around up there, and this is an example of what you'll find. I've found quite a few horseshoes, relics of old farm equipment, bottles, hammers and assorted tools. When we moved in, there were lots of rotting floorboards, still in place, that I had to remove to make way for a small flower garden and some lawn space. When I find one of these, I try to imagine what the 'old grey mare' might have looked like and how she might have spent her day. I don't think: luck. I'm not a big fan of it. As a matter of fact, I don't believe that it's a 'big player' in this game of life. And if there is such a thing... we make our own. Ever been lucky?

  1. You are lucky --oh, I mean fortunate-- to have such a dig spot in your own backyard.

I'm not a believer in luck and never like to say Good luck! but English seems to lack anything better. In Hebrew we say bahatslacha, meaning "with success." And the French bon courage is nice too.

When I show even one little sign of aging my daughter starts singing "That old gray mare just ain't what she used to be ...."

  2. Who was it who said . . . "The harder I work, the luckier I get." ? In any case, I subscribe to that.

  5. Bon courage and Good Luck don't mean exactly the same.To give a meaning to such things as a shoe horse? well, if it does not help, it does not hurt either, so , why not?.. :o)(I'd like to have a backyard with such treasures in it! )

  8. well, since you hung the horseshoe upside-down, all your luck has run out! supposed to be hung in a U. :)

in my childhood, the neighbor across the road had an old barn and he used to have draft horses. i'd go digging and find shoes, bits, leather pieces from harnasses, etc. it was a treasure trove to a girl obsessed with horses.

  13. I do also think we make our own luck in life.

  14. Lucky? I've had some good fortune in life but I don't like the superstitious idea of luck. On the other hand, I do believe in the power of chance and randomness. Not exactly the same thing.

  15. I don't think I'm going to comment on getting lucky. Or luck in general. Like the old boy said, the only luck I've ever had was back luck. On the other hand, Bob said it right: luck boils down to chance and randomness. So you can say you were lucky to be born at a certain time into a certain family, but it was all purely chance and random. Maybe that fact should make us more accepting of those who are different or who had bad "luck" as to when and where they were born.
