Gated

Lots of us rent movies. I don't. When I was recovering from surgery, a friend gave me a subscription to Netflix. That was pretty cool, but really I could have lived without it. I'm watching less TV too. Something now or then on TCM, a few reruns of classic, comedic shows like Seinfeld or Frasier, and if the Red Sox make the summer interesting their games will fill my evenings. That's about it. Pretty sad, huh. The silver screen? There isn't a movie right now that I'd say I have to see. I've pretty much become a slave to this machine I'm staring at and typing on right now. I can't say I'm proud of this fact either. I'm really going to try to back away soon. I won't go cold turkey, but there are other things I want and need to do.  I like to play a bit of the blame game, when it comes to time on the laptop. As you know, winters are long up her in my corner of the world... ok, you're not buying that? Me neither. Exercise?
Next topic.
By the way, Mad Men returned last night. Don't call me at 9 PM Sundays.
I really don't want to broach this subject, but did I see Heidi Klum in a commercial last night as Mrs. Robinson from the Graduate? Was she sexily hawking a bourbon, triple cheese burger?
Maybe I'll give TV another shot.

  1. Books are a better bet, no question about it.

  2. Ditto what Kate says. Plus: outside. There was a v. funny schtick in The New Yorker a few years ago wherein a guy discovered. . . the . . . OUTDOORS. Ohmygosh. Amazing graphics! Surround sound! etc. :))

  3. As I was reading this I was thinking to myself "but what about Project Runway". But, I do share your disregard for most TV. There really is very little worth watching. I am hooked on "The Good Wife" and "Smash" though.

  4. We still watch Netflix movies, but mostly old ones that had talented writers and actors. Just enjoyed Charles Lawton in Hobson's Choice and Witness For The Prosecution. Don't watch much commercial TV.

  5. I think there is a lot better quality tv being broadcast now than ever before, unfortunately there is also a lot more trash tv being broadcast as well. Just last night, as you said, Mad Men was on, so was Game of Thrones, Call the Midwife, and The Good Wife, which are all wonderful television programs. Books are not inherently better (or worse) than tv. There are plenty of books which should not have been published (or read); as with tv you have to be discriminating.

  6. I agree with Clueless. At its beginning, TV was supposed to bring education and clever things to everyone, we are often far from it. Smae for books. But when it comes to Downton Abbey, or Games of thrones , I'm happy. Yes, let's discriminate!

  7. not much into movies these days. used to have netflix but cancelled it about a year or so ago. still have hbo and showtime - but end up watching their series (like boardwalk empire, dexter, etc.) instead of movies.

  8. I can't say I miss TV, like you a good Baseball game would be nice. On my last trip to Denver I channel surfed in the hotel with no luck of find something to catch my interest. I do however like a good movie now and then but when it comes to network TV, I can live without it.

  9. There are definitely still some gems amid the mire! Downton Abbey, The Good Wife (so clever) Call the Midwives and a few more, selectivity is the way to go these days methinks! We have some excellent Australian shows too..Packed to the Rafters, Mr and Mrs Murder..so good!

  10. I read somewhere that for every hour we watch TV we decrease our happiness quotient and shorten our life by 22 minutes. I guess I'm willing to risk that in order to watch Mad Men.

  11. I like the mysteries on Masterpiece Theatre and some shows like The Good Wife Bu there is nothing that I really hate to miss.

  12. I don't watch much TV either. I'd much rather read a good book or sit at my computer.

  14. Don't bother yourself with Heidi. She'll leave you for the chauffeur!

  15. Like you, we do not rush to the theatre. Sometimes I rent from the library, but mostly, books rule. We can even be found reading during dinner sometimes.

  17. I'm with you every step of the way. We have three TVs. One is broken, one has chronic cable problems, and no one bothers to get them fixed. We gave up our Netflix subscription because we rarely have two free hours to watch a movie. If I'm home from work early enough (not often) I may watch Stephen Colbert or the Daily Show. The Simpsons and the Cardinals are usually welcome, although the baseball game is usually on in the background while I do something else.

Other than that, there isn't much on TV that's a better use of my time then the alternatives.

  18. I probably watch more TV now than I ever did. There are some great dramas. Plus, I am a sports fan. Still, I am more of a reader.

  19. I try to approach all this media/tech stuff in a balanced fashion but the computer always wins hands-down. I'm addicted to it along with my camera and books.
