Old Glory

Happy Flag Day!
Growing up June 14th was quite a pivotal day in my academic life. School days for me always seemed to come to a close on some day in June. I always thought that if I was walking down Stevens Avenue shouting, screaming and planning my summer, that was a good thing. Heck, we've had winters lately that have pushed summer school vacations well into the mid-20s in June. In my wicked mind, it's really not a good start to a vacation, if the first day of summer (June 21)  finds kids still doing their readin' and writin'. And that's a fact, Jack!
By the way, this very, large patriotic banner flying over a local business looks a bit want for repair.
Did you know there are 6 'old glories' flying on that moon tonight?

"I pledge allegiance to the flag...".

  1. I didn't know that. You learn something everyday.

  2. I completely forgot about Flag Day. When I was young, it used to be a big day with almost everyone hanging a flag outside their home or business. You don't see that so much anymore.

  3. Around here they're out right before Memorial Day but go back to school in the blistering month of August. Nuts.

  4. Flag Day is one of my favorite holidays even though I don't live in the States now. The flags are up. Glad to see a blog celebrating 'today'. Happy Flag Day to you too.

  6. Flag Day . . . it does seem an oddish holiday, doesn't it? Still: it's fun in a small town. And weird to think about the 6 on the moon!

  9. I did not know that about the moon! I never noticed Flag Day this year, or most others...But, the last day of school, THAT is big: for my teacher friends, for me the retired teacher, & for me, the former child, YeeeeHaw! & for all those children of today. Yes, school learnin' is harder in June...For us as kids, summer vacation meant running around outdoors, all over the place...I think it's different for kids-today. Don't they go right from school to organized summer programs?
The flag around these parts that I think is the most surreal: The car dealer's flag in Saco...
