Blue Dawn

There was low light as I made my way up Congress Street the other morning. Often I have been asked about how this city has changed since the days I rode my bike up and down the streets. The city has exploded. Changes are everywhere I look. Like everything else in the world big changes often begin without notice. If I had to make list of all the ways this town has been altered, I would probably run out of paper before I stopped writing. Parking, like in any city, has always been a big deal. When I saw my first parking garage going up, I said, "They are going to park cars up in the air?" In this photo today, we see two large ones connected by this skyway. These two provide parking for the Maine Medical Center, further up the hill and to the right off of Bramhall Street.
Parking garages eliminate one problem: getting vehicles off the narrow, limited parking streets.
Now, if they could only lower the prices.
Yes, the city has changed a lot, but other things haven't.
I'm still living in a dream world, some days!
And I can get blue.

  1. It looks to me like they did a pretty good job getting cars off the street. Now all it needs are a few pedestrians. :-)

  2. That dream world is nice to retreat to every now and then :)

  3. Phoenix just extended downtown parking meters to 10:00 PM. People aren't very happy about that. I guess in a way that's a sign of a vibrant downtown. People aren't exiting at 5:00 PM anymore.

  4. It seems that if you don't go to a certain area for a couple of months the whole area changes on you!

  7. It's nice that they provide a skyway so you don't have to cross the street in traffic.

  8. Blue really saturates this photo. A place as big as the medical center sure needs a garage, not surface parking.

  11. Do you have a pattern of skyways from building to building, too? The skyways in both Msp and St. Paul allow pedestrians miles of access to different places during our wicked winter weather.
