Makin' a Splash

Here's a news splash!
I'm not a big fan of milk. Never was. At breakfast each morning, a tall glass was always waiting for me. Let's see. We tasted pancakes, French toast, oatmeal, hot buttered toast, Cream of Wheat, Wheaties, Cherrios, Jets, Trix, Captain Crunch, Sugar Pops, Rice Krispies, Corn Flakes, Alpha-bits, Apple Jacks, Fruit Loops, Cocoa Puffs, and some Frosted Flakes. With four kids at the table we sampled all these breakfast delights and a few more I bet. Grampa tried to win me over to shredded wheat, but he wasn't too convincing. It looked like hay to me. Still does. I always reminded Mom that most all of these had milk added to some degree. Apparently, I wouldn't have made a very good lawyer. Afterall, if I couldn't win my Mom over at the most important meal of the day, my chances in a courtroom were going to be pretty slim. I must say though, whatever we wanted in a cereal box had a pretty good chance of finding its way to our kitchen table. The glass of milk had to disappear though. Her rule. Mostly, I obliged.
What was your pleasure for breakfast growing up?
Oh, and I really liked the cereal with the prizes.
Favorite?
The submarine that, loaded with baking soda, would go up and down in the bathtub.

  1. I confess that I like milk, but have never been a big fan of cereal. I was a cinnamon toast kind of girl, back in the day.

  2. Didn't like milk? How odd. I ate lots of cereal, but didn't really like the sugar coated ones. Agreed with your Grampa about shredded wheat, but my favorite as a kid was pancakes or French toast.

  3. My parents told me that when I was very young, I tossed my bottle out of the crib and would not drink milk from that day forward. They talked to the doctor and he simply said, if she doesn't like, don't force her to drink it. There are other ways to get calcium. (Thank you doctor!) To this day I can't stand the stuff. Cereal? I eat it dry or sometimes with orange juice. Crazy huh?

  5. i do not like a glass of milk - not even with dessert. but i like it with cereal, of course, and a spot in my coffee.

we had a breakfast thing that was sort of like cream of wheat but it was supposed to be chocolate flavored or something? can't remember what it was called, though. we usually had 'healthy' cereals like corn flakes or cheeries (which i still eat today) but now and then we'd have a treat like sugared corn pops. :)

  7. Don't remember a lot of what I ate. I ate it too fast. But I do remember pancakes being a special treat.

  8. I love milk, actually. As for shredded wheat, I tried it once... and never again.

  10. I'm a bacon and egg person, but when it comes to cereal it's been Cheerios almost exclusively for the past 66 years! Original and not any of the honey nuts stuff. Preferably with a sliced banana.

  15. Ha, this post could be the story of my childhood in Chicago too. Except that I love milk.
Yes, shredded wheat looked like little hay bales. My favorite prize in the cereal was a series of different rocks. The obsidian was beautiful!
Haha, I played with that submarine with baking soda in the tub too, along with other war ships!
