Plant Divorce

Never been a big fan of plants.
Growing them that is.
Love to have them near me. Smell them. Watch them grow and all. But left to my devices? It ain't too pretty. So plants and I have agreed to go our separate ways. Irreconcilable differences, you might say. It was a amiable divorce. Maybe the final straw occurred when I got a new room some years back with a big window opened to the courtyard. Most years about this time, we'd bring plants off the deck, and Elenka would take them to her classroom with plenty of sunlight. This particular year, I told her I'd take some of the pressure off her and bring some to my room. I brought in about seven or so. They looked to be shaking. Were they nervous about something? And the story goes... Too much water? Too dry? Too warm sitting on the heater? Over abundance of strong sun through the glass? Anyway, by February they had all pretty much met their demise.
My heart was in the right place.
But I guess my green thumb was left behind.
In my garden, planting is no issue.
It's the tending and upkeep that lets me down at times.
Bugs!
Blight.
As for our deck garden, I'll help get the plants from the deck to the porch.
That's about the extent of my 'fall planting'.
Anything else might be hazardous to plant life.
We've gone our separate ways.

  2. Same here. You might say I'm into "organic" gardening. Whatever grows naturally on its own is what I raise.

  8. So sad, but I understand. I "used to" have plenty of pretty house plants, but now that we are away for weeks at a time, I can't be here to "love and talk" with them. So, I no longer even try to have house plants. Sad, for sure. Whenever retirement comes, perhaps I'll reconsider.

  12. It is difficult to keep 'em alive when you have to bring them in to protect them from the weather. I've done the same thing. Now, I have no where to grow anything to be responsible for, other than one African violent given to me by the Blue Diamond staff after my hysterectomy in late April. I haven't killed it--yet. About your HATE for each team in the baseball series and your perverse enjoyment of the games, I'm intrigued about how and when the enjoyment pours over you. Clapping at everyone's strike out? Laughing when someone catches a line drive or a fly ball? I'll bet you've got it down to a science.

  21. I have been reading these recent comments, and I am here to confirm the news. Birdman has recently passed away. Yes, it's very sad. I do not know wether to reveal his identity, as in the past he has wished to keep it a secret. I do know that it was very unexpected, and he had a heart attack yesterday. That is why there was no post.

I will miss you (the man, the teacher, my colleague and my friend) and your zest for life (the great music that started so many of our days, your funny stories, these beautiful photos on your beloved blog, and most of all the sound of your laughter.) While it has not been the same around here since you retired, it is unreal to me - right now - to think that you are gone. It has been a shock to the system. You were one in a million and I feel fortunate to have been among those who had the privilege to call you my friend. My deepest sympathies go out to E, J, D&M, and your sisters.... 76. Early on, I used the alias, Marchin O'Neachtain but felt it important that I say a few words here in the hope that it brings some peace to the passing of my brother, Birdman AKA Mark.

    Tribute to a Brother
    October 24th, 2015
Are there any Catholics out there? Did anyone here attend Parochial school and have nuns as teachers? Well back when Mark was in 6th grade, he was a prankster, witty, and always pushed the envelope. Mark arrived early for class on April 1st, and decided to play an innocent April Fool's joke on the nuns/class. He decided to take the picture of Jesus Christ and turned it upside down. He quickly spied Pope John the 23rd's picture and flipped that around as well.
He thought that he would get a good laugh from the classmates, nuns, and anyone else nearby, since he thought everyone had a sense of humor. The nuns were not happy and eventually asked the kids who had done such a dastardly deed. After a long period of silence, Mark admitted his wrong and the nuns contacted my dad and well Mark was confined to his room for a week. The Catholics do not have a sense of humor.

A second story had to do with Mark's ties. He had wide ties, narrow ties, Einstein tie, Mona Lisa tie, and bow ties. He had a tie for every occasion. We were heading to New Jersey to attend a wedding and I stopped at Mark's house with my single bag. I could not move throughout his kitchen, since he had so many bags, suitcases, pillows, blankets, and various hangers. I asked him if he had his ties packed. He said yes! We finally arrived in New Jersey and dressing for the rehearsal dinner, but Mark could not find where he had packed his ties. Finally, he opened a section of his suit case, undid the snaps, and found his ties, after experiencing a lot of stress. Here they are: (I pulled out several hundred ties on a hanger). Mark found his ties. Notice the hanger is bent.

Mark was at peace with his life. He was at peace with the universe including: Colleagues, former students, blog, sisters, me, blog, friends, and his beautiful wife Ellen and his loving son Justin. It was his time to go, his gig was up. It was similar to when all of the kids are playing basketball at the school yard court or at the ball field, where day after day you play with all ages and admire the older boys because they teach you how to play and compete all summer long. Then all of a sudden, you go to the court/field and the older boys are no longer there, because they have moved on to bigger and better things. That is the loss I am feeling. The younger ones are now the older boys and we must carry the torch for the next younger group.

Mark was a wonderful brother, one that any/all guys would love to have around. He was my wing man, my personal internet explorer, and my confidante. I will miss the unusual wit/humor and his incredible sense of loyalty, not only towards me, but also his beautiful wife and son. We will miss you but hopefully see you again down the path of life. His final words to Donna and me were, “Thanks guys, this was so much fun, I am glad that I went, thanks for inviting me!” Exit.....Stage Left!

    Sincerely
    Marty Norton
