Beach Puzzle

Here are some rocks along the beach at Peaks Island. During those cold winters nights around the kitchen wood stove, when the games of Old Maid, Crazy Eights and Gin Rummy got old, Mom pulled out her boxes of Jigsaw puzzles. She had about ten boxes hidden away in the dining room closet. One was an image of horses gallivanting around in a corral, another was of an old covered bridge in fall, still one more was of a snow-covered mountain top scene. When she tired of them, she traded with her friends or bought one or two cheap at a church rummage sale. We all enjoyed doing puzzles. Four kids gathered around a tippy card table made frigid nights go fast, and she got the job done. She kept us quiet and entertained for hours. I'll not forget those fun-filled evenings.
Life's a puzzle. Put it together!

  4. It took me awhile to make the connection between the photo and puzzles. Perhaps I should just go to bed so that my brain refreshes itself. Another great story, Mr. Storyteller! Makes me want to go out and buy some puzzles. Reminds me of some images, tho. Can't remember which city nor state, but on one of our road trips, DH and I entered a restaurant that had dozens of puzzles assembled, framed, and hanging on the walls. Very unusual.

  6. Just yesterday I took an elderly friend puzzle shopping. She has very little money so had to opt for thrift shop finds. I hope she and her husband aren't disappointed to find the puzzles she purchased are missing pieces.

  7. Sounds like you had a nice childhood. I'm not sure I like "life is a puzzle" idea. I keep losing the pieces.

Your comment about the triker was funny. We had one too. He ran into a tree. Now he's a pedestrian! ;-)

  11. What a wonderfully cozy image. Both long hard winters and puzzles take a special kind of person, someone philosophical, patient and hopeful.

  12. I love the associations that you make to things! I had a puzzle of Busch gardens that must have been put together a dozen times when I was a kid.

  13. Same for us during our blizzards in Michigan. Lovely memories. I was the type to stare at the piece then the picture on the box and figure out where to place it...whereas my sister took a piece and would literally try to fit it on every piece on the board. Which type were you? :D
