Beach Stats

We complained often as kids. Well, I did anyway. I better not vouch for my brothers and sisters and paint with a wide brush on this one. However, one thing we could all agree on. When the station wagon headed out to the beach, we all tried to convince Mom to steer clear of Willard. We'd cry Crescent! We'd scream Higgins! Heck, we even tried to direct her towards a lake Forest Lake (blasphemy!), but she wasn't buyin'. Willard was relatively close, with easy parking and it had restrooms. No peeing in the ocean for this lady, I guess. Two aspects always to consider when going to the ocean to swim in Maine. Stay clear of freezing water and rocks! Willard had both in abundance! Cold water is a givin in this state, until at least August. 57.6 yesterday morning. That's freezing to me, anyway you measure it. As for the unpleasantness to your feet, I don't know what was worse: low tide where it seemed you walked for a mile on little rocks or playing in the surf at high tide and being bounced around on them. Ah... the cuts and bruises. Pick your poison, I guess.

Yesterday's Beach Report: YES, the rocks were still there, the water was icy cold, but the afternoon temperature topped off in the low 80s, under solid blue skies. Hot!
Monday is going to be hot, humid, in the 90s.
We're headed back!
Just when I get out of the water... it pulls me back in!

  4. You make it sound so terrible! It's my favorite beach. No big waves (don't go into the water anyway), really nice sand, view of 2 islands and also, get this, TWO light houses....one to the right and one to the left. Free parking, bathrooms and snackbar. Sheesh.
    It was a great day.
Mojitos on the deck when we got home. What else do ya want?

  5. It looks wonderful! Yes, there is always some bad with the good, but finding the good is what makes life so rewarding. Enjoy!

  7. Ice cold water sure sounds a lot like a Swedish summer.

  8. Getting used to the rocky beaches here -- and the small bits of sandy beach -- but that Willard looks like it has LOTS of sandy beach . . .

  9. I never took to Willard. I DO like the Greenbelt. Tar sands shipments & smoke stacks could change both...My favorite was Scarborough Beach when it was a state park. How I loved to swim there. I'm with your mom though: I prefer a toilet to the ocean! Sounds like you both had a fun day...

  10. I also remember going over the South Portland bridge hanging out the station wagon window to look down through the slats to the ocean water below. How about those black tire tubes! Those were the days, bro! I'm with Elenka, go Willard! Remember the lifeguard? He's the only one we ever saw with a tan!

    Lakeland Checks In!

  12. Know just what you mean by cold water. Grew up near the shores of Lake Michigan, and with an off shore wind it felts like arctic waters. My feet and ankles would go numb. Never mind about swimming. That was just for crazy people. At least it was all sand with few rocks. Never a thought to UV index. It hasn't been invented yet. I always turned red.

  13. 57.6 is below freezing to me. We used to go swimming in lakes in Idaho and Utah when I was a kid that had freezing water and didn't think anything about it. Not any more.
