Who reads yesterdays' papers?
I did once.
It was that crazy newsboy instinct inside me. During my four years away at college, Mom subscribed to the weekly paper and had it delivered straight to my dorm mailbox. It was always four days late, but I looked forward to its arrival. I must admit I mostly skimmed it except for the sports' pages, but it brought the city, that I had never been away from, right to my bedside off in Western New York. For an emotional kid, who missed home more than I led on, it was an anchor I needed. College life had enough distractions that would lead me astray, if I let them. It's arrival was a constant reminder to 'stay the course'.
And that life was not always 'full speed ahead'.
It must have worked.
How thoughtful of your mom . . .
ReplyDeleteIt's fun to read the hometown newspapers to keep abreast of what is happening. Especially if you are a little homesick.
ReplyDeleteDigging through some old boxes in the garage the other day I came across a set of newspapers dated the day of JFK's assassination. At the time I think I thought the kids would like these at some point. Maybe I ought to ask them?
ReplyDeleteSome news takes a long while to become too stale to read.
ReplyDeleteWhile out-of-town I read the newspapers on my MacAir but really prefer the "real thing." Usually save the Sunday newspapers yet seldom return to read sections or articles I missed. Why do I hang on to them I wonder?
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear that I wasn't the only one who was homesick when I first went to college. Thankfully, I did get over it but those first few months were kind of hard.
ReplyDeletethat is a neat memory. :)
ReplyDeletei love when you're in a really remote place out of the country and a hotel gives you a printed piece of paper with american news on it from like four days ago. i always enjoy reading it, much more than a regular newspaper, because it feels like you're getting a secret report about this far away place and all of it's most important details.
ReplyDeleteAgree, news from home is always appreciated -- barbara
ReplyDeleteLove the photo. I read yesterday's news every day. I have a subscription to a local Quimper paper that arrives by post the next day...
ReplyDeleteI don't read today's paper, let alone yesterday's! But I do like this picture. And glad that the hometown paper got you through homesick times.
ReplyDeleteMy parents, who live in Florida, still receive my small town newspaper. It is the town they grew up in and it arrives three days late.
ReplyDeleteRevolver, and Magical Mystery Tour
ReplyDeleteNice light in this photo.
ReplyDeleteReading your post made me begin to think of my relationship with newspapers and I realise how much they're important in my life ! I'll have to think about that deeper..
ReplyDeleteThese days I have an opposite problem. With iPads and laptops and iPhones, etc., I can read the Hartford, Boston, Columbus and Naples and national newspapers online, not to mention watching the evening local and national news, and then the next morning starts by reading the local paper and Wall Street Journal . . . which I have ALREADY read online the night before. Unplug me! Please!
ReplyDeleteI definitely read yesterday's paper if I didn't get around to reading it yesterday. I have to read the obituaries to make sure my name is not in the lineup.
