Black Umbrella

"Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in."
That was Al Pacino in Godfather 3. There's probably a more appropriate line somewhere in Shakespeare, but it escapes me right now. The line also appears in the Sopranos, as the guys are sitting around 'practicing' it humorously. Pretty funny, but yesterday wasn't. In my latest post, I was praising, with tongue tucked firmly in cheek, the fact that I had seen evidence of melting snow. Then suddenly... Whack! You wouldn't think a 1/4 inch of snow would wreak havoc, but it did, including a fatality nearby. My short traverse to work proved to be the the trickiest of the entire winter. After the plows took to the roads early, it was like attempting to make your way across a frozen lake. And wouldn't you know it, when I started down the huge hill on Rt. 35 I was facing both a large, reckless plow and a 18-wheeler heading my way.
"Bless me Father..."
It was hairy, but I got to the bottom safely.
I'm thinking positive here.
In the 40s this weekend...

  1. And here I was thinking this Friday night's "wintry mix" was nothing to worry about. Thanks, Birdman!

  4. i wish they would put the sopranos on netflix...sad about the fatality...glad you made it safely...we might get a little wintry mix tomorrow morning...they don't really sound like they know what is going on, just like all winter...the weather folks have really been bamboozled this winter.

  7. I shoveled out another eight inches of snow yesterday, but bright sun melted off the plowed streets by afternoon. Nothing like an icy road to get your attention when the back end of the car feels like it wants to swing around to the front.

  9. Birdman, old boy, let me explain this to you. You had all of that worry and trouble because you were commuting to and from work. If you were retired, you would have looked at some blogs, caught up on Spring Training and the start of March Madness, read some about Putin and the Ukraine, then caught up on True Detectives and House of Cards before picking up a Jack Reacher novel. I know what I am talking about . . .

  10. When it is just a wee bit of snow it doesn't take much to turn it to ice and then all hell breaks out on the roads. We got a bit more last night but the sun is melting it all this morning. Love the pic!

  12. Well, I am glad you made it ok, so sad about the fatality. Our weather in the other Portland has been strange but nothing like yours except for a few days. I am thankful I do not live in higher elevations.

  13. That ice is the downside of the wonderful, then nasty melting. Dang! Stay safe!
    Jack does make a point...

  15. Once more unto the breach might be a good Shakespearean phrase for this!

  18. Not finding a Shakespearean equivalent at the moment, but I get the point. It must have been all ice. Did the, um, people you work with show up?

I remember a night driving out of the Rocky Mountain foothills into Denver with my wife and kids when I 70 was a sheet of ice. There must have been 10 or 20 cars per mile off in the ditch. We crept along for hours and made it to our hotel but I'm still not sure how.

  19. As I'm reading you, windows are wide open, sun is shining and it's almost 20° outside.. I wish I could send you some of all that as a solace for your bad moment! Glad you're safe.
