Wet Walk

Not a lot of tears yet!
Day One of March Madness is over!
My scorecard shows a respectable 12 wins and only 4 losses. Pretty good for a guy who followed the NCAA Basketball season just on the peripheral this past winter. However, the other evening as I was studying my choices and trying to determine the possible winner between THE Ohio State University and little University of Dayton, Elenka, who's lucky if she can determine the difference between a basketball and lacrosse stick, grabbed a bracket and vigorously filled in the blanks. I studied the wins and losses, a team's RPI and conference wins and losses and made my logical choices. As I said above, I'm happy with my opening 12-4 results. Well, until I saw Elenka's brackets. She selected teams on whether she had ever visited the city or state, and whether she enjoyed her visit. After the first 16 games, she's at 11-5, just one game off my pace.
Favorite cities?
Where's the scientific research here?
Maybe I should be crying.

  1. Now let's just see how Elenka's method compares with President Obama's. :-)

  3. I know in general what you're talking about. Sort of. Perhaps you really are a little mad? Maybe? Ask Elenka.

  5. I'm with Elenka, and my results at same time = same! 11-5. We know how to roll.

  6. Just be happy that Elanka isn't 16-0 for her picks. How would that make you feel?

  7. Since I don't follow the sport to begin with, I'd be inclined to employ the eenie meanie meinie moe method to fill out brackets.

  8. I don't really care about the tournament, I just root for St. Louis U. They don't get in all that often.

  9. Who would pick Dayton over Ohio State? Or Harvard to win? And MERCER beating Duke today? Those who pick based on the names of the mascots or how cute the coach is usually do better than those who use mathematical regression models.

  10. My state is out so it's on to rooting for Arizona.
