4th Floor

Here's something a bit different from me. This image was taken with my cell, out a dirty, 4th floor window looking towards Tukey's Bridge, off in the distance at the upper left. Can you see a fog bank moving in from Casco Bay? This picture was taken from what we call the West End off towards the East End or the Eastern Prom area of town. I'm teaching myself a little bit of history this morning. I always thought Tukeys referred to 'two keys' that came together, fusing the neighborhoods of East Deering and Munjoy Hill. I was very wrong! The bridge, built in 1960 is named after Lemuel Tukey, a tax collector from the Back Cove neighborhood of the city in the Eighteenth Century.
Shows you what I know.
Two keys... Sheeeeesh!
What was I thinking?

  5. I love this view! Very nice. That has to be the first time I've ever heard of anything, bridge, street, town, whatever, being named for a tax collector.

  6. I wonder why France doesn't have more places named after tax collectors. We seem to adore taxes.

It's nice to see a broader view! :-)

  7. I love seeing all the wooden houses - so unlike here when almost everything is brick.

  8. Well, I misread it and thought it was TURKEY Bridge. :))

  9. He must have been a nice guy. You don't normally name things after tax collectors.

  10. That's a darned nice shot through a dirty window! I love those fog banks...I usually find fog very soothing.
I'm not going to do an exhaustive (or even tiring) search, but I'd bet yours is one of very, very few honors bestowed on a tax collector in the U.S., bearing in mind British tax collectors wearing tar and feather suits in the Revolutionary War era and a similar, popular mindset these days.

  13. Isn't it remarkable what good photos we can now take with cell phones? Mine sometimes surprise me. Tukey? Stookey? Are you sure it isn't the grandfather of the singer of the Wedding Song? [Now I am starting to worry that my mind is rambling like my friend BirdMark.]
