This scene clearly shows why we were so happy taking Amtrak to Boston yesterday. The Tobin Bridge was jammed packed at 5 PM. The train was loaded too down in the early morning and back in the evening, and for those who want train travel 'to work' for Maine, this is a positive sign. We headed to Boston yesterday for one of our day adventures. Our main destination was the Museum of Fine Arts and the Jamie Wyeth Retrospective that is available through December 28th. I highly recommend it, if you are going to be in the area this fall. Of the over 100 pieces on display, I especially enjoyed looking at his portraits of John F. Kennedy, Andy Warhol and Rudolph Nureyev, his paintings of all his angry gulls and ravens and of course all his work portraying life on the Maine coast and especially the day to day existence on Monhegan. Later, we took the T(subway) over to the Faneuil Hall Marketplace and then on to two fine chairs overlooking Boston Harbor, accompanied by a couple cooling beverages.
The trip home was easy.
Choo Choo...
Highly recommend the train. I had a great seat mate! Fun day.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree, there's something quite satisfying about sitting in the air conditioned train watching the freeway hassle.. Especially as the train station stops right in the city centre!
ReplyDeleteSheesh! Look at all that traffic!
ReplyDeleteYou definitely took an easier route by train than by highway.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a fantastic day in the big city. I think I would enjoy that exhibit very much. It certainly is way better to take the train than to try to navigate the traffic and that doesn't touch the parking problems one you get there. I'm off to Chicago in late September and you can be sure I'll be commuting on the EL.
ReplyDeletesounds great!
ReplyDeleteDo not know much of Jamie, but I love his father's works. I am sure I will enjoy this exhibition, obviously traveling by train. (After catching a plane or two...)
ReplyDeleteI abolutely love travelling by train! I like this "in between" moment-already gone, still not arrived yet . This exhibit seems so attractive, you had a great day !
ReplyDeleteA wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteugh, i'd rather be on the train too! smart man!
ReplyDeleteSorry I won't be around. That bridge looks like my daily commute.
ReplyDeleteThat looks just like my former commute in California, and there was no alternative. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteWHAT? I was there yesterday, too. I was going to put a note on your blog telling you that there is a roomful of Monhegan Island paintings. (I liked Wyeth's Warhol paintings, but I thought his early paintings in the last room as you exit were the best. He did one portrait of a female pediatrician from Johns Hopkins that was spectacular . . . piercing blue eyes.) If you saw a tall guy in a blue golf shirt taking pictures, that was me.
ReplyDeleteRegardless, that's quite a bridge!
ReplyDeleteTrains are always faster. Do post some pictures from the museum!
ReplyDeleteWow, what an adventure. The Wyeth portrait of John Kennedy is one of my most favorites and I would love to see it live. Awesome that you could take such a handy train trip.
ReplyDeleteI do not miss rush hour traffic. Nice shot.
ReplyDeleteGlad you all got to do this. I took the bus instead of the train only 2 times in the last years: the 1st time it broke down, the 2nd, all roads into Boston but 1 were closed due to flooding. So, it's back to the train next time. Jamie & the Wyeths are always having exhibitions at the Farnsworth~so y'all come on up sometime & we could meet there.
ReplyDeleteI shall not complain about our traffic again (at least for a week) after seeing this. That's a lot of cars backed up.
