Hotel Ice

These icicles were captured dripping at our Holiday Inn: By the Bay Portland.
Cold January days like today were made for sleds and ice skates. There never was a long, icy hill that my sled didn't fall in love with. And as for my skating, I especially enjoyed the Allen's Corner rink. It was big. There was  plenty of room for ice hockey games, games of red rover on skates, 'the whip' or my favorite pastime: chasing good looking high school girls in their white skates. These days my love of ice pretty much just extends to the ice machine at hotels or our ice  cube tray and some concoction I've thrown together on a warm summer afternoon on the deck. On days like today,  I've got my eyes peeled for any large chunks of ice that might be in the mood of falling from buildings.
Getting a 'header' by one of these might signal less 'ice time' on the deck in 5 months or so.
That wouldn't be a good at all.

  1. Ice in the veins is one thing. Ice on the head is another. Sometimes, though, I've wished people with ice in their veins would get some ice on the head. A "header" as you call it! :)

Now, I've got to get some coffee but it won't be iced.

  2. One of those falling on your head could put you out of commission for a very long time. I remember as a kid, breaking them off and sucking on them. That is until mother explained how dirty that water was.

    1. Didn't stop me. If it was clear, I was sucking!

  3. I used to (and still do) enjoy knocking the icicles free from their hanging perch.

  4. Those icicles makes for a great picture, but they are an indication of poor insulation and air flow in the soffits. This condition with destroy a roof. Getting hit by falling icicles is a winter hazard best avoided. Keep looking up.

  7. Icicles make nice pictures, as yours shows. I prefer to avoid them otherwise.

  10. Sawteeth, but as dangerous falling as cutting.

I never learned to ice skate. City kid. But later in like I tried for year after year to learn to ski. Couldn't do that either. City kid, city klutz, same result.

  11. I remember as a child sledding down a hill up in the nearest town that seemed so big when I was six or so. Looking at it as an adult, I would think, "wasn't this bigger?"

  12. Icicles can be very dangerous, even killers. Watch yourself. And be sure Elenka is watching out, too.
