Grand Window

This is a window in the old Grand Trunk building. It sits at the bottom of India Street and seems to be vacant at this time. A trip down to see the trains pulling into the Grand Trunk station and a swing over to see if there were any ships docked at the Maine State Pier was quite a treat for us kids and a night on the town for mom and dad. And if the 'natives' in the back seat behaved themselves, the station wagon usually made a sweep out to Scarborough on Route 1 to the Strafford Farms ice cream stand and those cones of strawberry, chocolate, pistachio, vanilla, orange sherbet... mmmmmmm!

  1. Trains, ships, ice cream - that still works for me.

  2. A nice memory. What is it about trains that touches us all?

  4. Ah, station wagons...a great way to transport kids, take trips and a place to watch outdoor movies.

  5. Oh yeah, the 'if you're good we'll stop for ice cream' ploy - very effective with my sibs, too.

  8. Was that when they still had steam locomotives? I remember the coal-burning ones from childhood in Chicago. And when they opened the St. Lawrence Seaway I could sit at Navy Pier (U. of I.) and watch the ships from all over the world.
So I can understand the joy in your post today, Birdman.

  9. Sadly, I could probably take photos from 20 buildings just like this one.

Just think how content we were when our choices were among five ice cream flavors. Are we better off now that we can choose from among 40? Or now that we can choose from among hundreds of TV stations, not just three?

    Written like an old f**t.

  12. Birdman -- Such simple nights remind me of similar childhood experiences that I had. Life used to be a little slower. Like the window -- too bad the trains have become almost obsolete for passenger service. -- barbara
