Storm Damage

This is from about two weeks back. The evening I picked Elenka at the Jetport, we had a whopper of a storm. Driving there was pretty slow going. The rain seemed to be coming down in a wall of water all the way in. Driving back home, the sky was a constant panorama of lightening  daggers and flashes. There was wind, but it didn't seem anything out of the ordinary for a summer thunderstorm. I was wrong. On a trip up to the garden the next morning to gather some cucumbers and tomatoes, I was surprised to find most of the corn lying sideways. This is what it looked like. Not pretty. Oh well, last summer we were a bit overwhelmed with our crop of maize. So, this spring, remembering that harvest, I planted a lot less, about 5 rows. Given this and the storm, I'll probably pay the price. Gardening is always an interesting trip. As that great SNL philosopher, Roseanna Roseannadanna (Gilda Radner) might say, "Storms, woodchucks, deer attacks, pestilence, rainy summers... It's always something!"
Portland got about 6.5 inches of rain that night.
Don't even mention the landing in that mess to Elenka.
It's something she wants to forget.
"Please put your seats in the upright position."
... and hang on!

  1. Predicting the outcome of any given crop strikes me as even a bigger gamble than the stock market.

  4. When I was reading this I was thinking about how the plane could have landed in that kind of weather. Yikes, that must have been a bumpy ride.

  5. Oi, poor Elenka. I flew through a thunderstorm over the Atlantic once and it was terrifying.
Your horizontal corn stalks are a-maize-ing.

  7. Very bad turbulence from start of landing approach to wheels on the ground. They must use good super strong glue on those planes!!

  8. Yeah, I'm thinking you were the one who had it easy. Even though I have flown a lot, getting tossed around is no fun at all. (Sorry, Elena . . . why is he complaining???)

Of the times I've flown, I only recall one time landing in bad weather like that.

  13. Sorry to hear of your storm damage. You got 6.5 inches of rain and no flooding? Wow!
At least you made it home safely. You can always buy corn at the farmer's market.
