Congress Street, in the heart of the city, is getting a bit crowded, and I don't mean with cars. It getting harder and harder to negotiate the sidewalks these days. The magazine that declared Portland as a mecca for the new foodie revolution might soon be having second thoughts. Where's my lawyer? To the right and the left of this main artery of the city, tables and chairs are scattered everywhere. Flower pots, A-frame menu boards add to the clutter. There's even a story in this morning's paper about it. See my blog is constantly on the cutting edge here in the city. In this shot, it actually looks like you have to 'parade' right through the restaurant to get down the sidewalk. Other places having this problem? You'd be hard pressed in this city to find an eating establishment these days, that does not offer outdoor dining in some shape or form. I'm blaming it, partially, on our recent harsh winter. Eating outside is the latest big thing around here. Thanks foodies! On the other hand, the smorgasbord of sidewalk clutter is one thing, but don't you just love this sign?

BTW, you failed to mention that your little (big) 'Birdman' actually made the sign displayed in this photo. It looks much bigger when it was actually in our kitchen!

i do like the sign and i love to eat outside! my husband on the other hand always wants to eat inside because he complains "it's too hot"! but then he'll eat on the beach in the blazing sun...which i hate!

ReplyDeleteSame problems here, maybe because we live in very touristic aeras . I don't like to have to walk through tables , especialy when someone is eating there !
ReplyDeleteI've noticed this in a few places but not so much here in the desert at this time of year. This time of year they take down those tables and store them until winter.
ReplyDeletejust send in a swarm of black flies or skeeters and that dining al fresco will go right out the door - or in the door. :)
ReplyDeleteOur city has restrictions on how much of the sidewalk can be used by the restaurants so there really isn't much of an issue here.
ReplyDeleteKudos for the fine sign work. I should have known because you were too excited about it! Can't say much about crowded sidewalks. I loved them in Paris...but maybe Portland is different. Maybe?
