"It was Beauty that killed the beast." King Kong (1933)
Down in the Old Port, here's an interesting way to use mannequins in windows. It certainly got my attention. Would you be surprised if I told you this was an upscale hair salon? I guess the wigs on the young ladies might have given it away. To be perfectly honest, it took me a moment or two to even catch on to the wigs. I guess you could say I was working my way up. Now, a couple of added thoughts. After I caught on to the hair, I really thought the 'gals' were just in the process of getting dressed. Silly me. When I caught on to the place being a salon, I just smiled. Do stores still use mannequins? I guess they do. As I recall (it's been a while since I've been in the mall), most are in store and not lining windows.
Does this window treatment with, for the most part, two naked ladies attract the ladies?
My guess?
No, you're either getting your hair done here or not.
Do they service males also?
I for one will never know.
I prefer saloons to salons anyway.
I wouldn't know about "servicing" men but I'm sure they have male customers. After all, how many barber shops have you seen lately? There are none left in my small town, whereas we still have three "beauty shops," as they're frequently called in the South.
ReplyDeleteI guess they really want nothing to distract from the hair, but I think it is having the opposite effect!
ReplyDeleteThere were 4 of these young ladies....2 in the other window. Someone's stupid idea if you ask me, but nobody asked me, so I enjoyed watched Birdman take his time framing his shots.
ReplyDelete.....'watching'...
ReplyDeleteI would have just thought they hadn't dressed them yet. I think they could have come up with a better idea.
ReplyDeletewell, got you to look! :)
ReplyDeleteFunny. And it will make people take notice. I would have gone in and asked about it.
ReplyDeleteWigs? What wigs?
ReplyDeleteMB
They are wearing wigs? I'm off to the nearest saloon!
ReplyDeleteYes, they're still used in shops. I remember finding them peculiar as a kid!
ReplyDeleteEasy to agree with you on this!
ReplyDeleteI have an eccentric friend who has 3 of them in his living room and he has vines growing up all over them - you tend to not notice them after a while. It must be hard to decide what to put in the window of a beauty salon.
ReplyDeletePut some clothes on those two.
ReplyDeleteI find this kind of strange. Can't believe it would be attractive/interesting to customers.
ReplyDeleteOnly female mannequins, no males? I suppose they'd have to be androgynous.
ReplyDeleteI've seen that in store windows in New York and even St. Louis. Sometimes they are about to be dressed and sometimes you can't tell what the hell is going on. For example, here's a pic of a TV commercial shoot on Wall Street NYC: https://flic.kr/p/6oVff1
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't say "great haircut" to me.
ReplyDeleteNope. I don't get it. But then they probably aren't used to doing grey hair anyhow.
ReplyDeleteLast week when I was in Portland they did catch my eye along with the print on the window below them: " Palleve" "Radiesse" "Botox" "Laser" "Massage" "Make Up". I don't even know what all of those words mean.. I thought the windows were pretty grotesque, your photo makes them less ugly IMHO. What REALLY struck me was the contrast of Portland to the old building in which these windows are situated. I took photos of the building from across the street...Makes me miss my old Portland of the 80's era. Over a few blocks there's a barber shop with an old fashioned pole: I prefer it to this place. Humpffff!
ReplyDeleteoops, I meant to say, was the contrast of this modern Portland to the old building...OK, since I'm back, I would also like to say: No artistry went into this, a fast & cheap display, IMHO...
ReplyDeleteI tend to want to see clothes in shop windows...
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading the comments on this one Birdman.. no comment :) :)

ReplyDeleteFace it, sex sells, and nothing is sexier than beautiful, naked women. This window would certainly get my attention, but I doubt I would seek out their services. Once had a shocking experience with naked mannequins. I was working in a department store, and took a service elevator up to one of the warehouse floors. The doors opened on a dimly lit room with over 100 naked women in all sorts of poses. Took me a moment to realize they were mannequins. It was a shock, but I had to laugh at myself.
