Pandemonium

Pandemonium breaks loose in Portland? I'm afraid not. If I was looking for excitement on this morning, I should have widened my scope. At the corner of Fore and Exchange, it wasn't a happening spot. Seen across the street here is Gritty McDuff's Brew Pub trimmed with green doors. Gritty's and Shipyard Brewing Company are two of the city's microbreweries that seem to always be going head to head to try to out do the other in new beers and label designs. I don't consider myself a micro connoisseur, but when it comes to beer I know what I like. Now, Gritty's Vacationland Summer Ale is one I order on tap each time I get a chance, but as for overall enjoyment Shipyard 's battery of Summer Ale, Export, Pumpkinhead (love that design) and their winter Prelude is the winner in my book hands down. And when it comes to label design, it's Shipyard in a walkover, if you ask me. So, let's raise a pint today!

Like beer? Do you have a favorite microbrew in your city? Share?

  1. Sorry, Birdman, I did all of my beer-liking in the old days. By my calculations, I will have to live to 107 without another drink to have an average lifetime consumption.

  2. Nope count me out Birdman, vile tasting stuff UNLESS you add a bit of lemonade to it (I can hear the outrage!!) and make it into a Shandy, now that is very thirst quenching on a hot day yeh!! are you still with me haha!

  5. I am not a beer guy, but I collected beer cans for years. Now and then I tasted the more exotic brands, but I still like more the container than the content, even now that most are bottles again.

  6. You get a big glass (chilled for maximum effect), depending on how strong you like it, usually half/half, half beer of your choice, and half lemonade, also there's the classic English version of lager and lime, just add a dash of lime juice to the beer and a slice of lemon, takes away the ughy taste of the beer, sooooo refreshing and easy to drink. I'm not sure though Birdman, somehow I'm not getting a picture of you thinking much of this idea haha! See if Elenka will try it and let me know what she thinks.

  8. Birdman, when I get home, I want to try the lemonade beer!!! Best potential idea I've heard in a long time!
All we have here in Florida is wine. tsk tsk

  9. You are too funny for a Saturday morning. We're you already nose deep in the suds?

Ice-cold beer on a hot day on the golf course - it matters not the brand. Otherwise, I drink very little of the stuff. Unless, of course, it's a hot day somewhere else! :-)

  10. I'm not a beer lover so I don't really have one. I have tasted a couple of micro beers that were tasty but that was on a vacation somewhere and I quickly forgot what they were.

  11. We are so lucky here in Bellingham to have several microbreweries to choose from! My favorite, and the most popular, is Boundary Bay Brewery. I love their scotch ale. The "son of frog" English ale at North Fork Brewery is also really good.

  14. I'm a grape girl, myself. The last microbrew I bought was called raspberry something. I thought raspberry was describing the color, but no. Vile stuff.

  15. I made the mistake of not giving in to peer pressure during my college years and never had a chance to start liking beer...so now the only beer I drink is the fancy Belgian fruit beer that tastes nothing like beer. Yum.

  16. I'd like some of that lemon beer once you and E mix up a pitcher. As for Shipyard, I'm with you. I stock up on cases of Pumpkinhead when autumn rolls around each year and treat myself to a delightful bottle every so often throughout the remaining seasons.

  17. I don't drink beer much anymore, but when I am visiting my son I sample his and they are so good. He is always buying different beers. I had a favorite from Trader Joe's, a blueberry beer, very good indeed.

  18. Yes, I do like beer. I'm not fussy about which brand as I don't drink it that often so have never become a connoisseur. I'm not a connoisseur of wine either. :) But I'm also not a teetotaller.

  20. NO---I'm not a beer drinker of any kind, but 2 of my 3 sons drink beer and love it... Our little town finally got a couple of Liquor Stores recently.. We had been a 'dry' county until recently... GADS!

  21. Can I borrow the sign for my office?

Our main local microbrew is Schlafly, http://www.schlafly.com/. I am particularly fond of the Kolsch.

Back to our high school discussion, yes, we had jug, not an acronym, just what they called it. And beadles to take attendance. And a prefect of discipline who looked like Frankenstein in a cassock.

    Great post.
