Sunday Best

I was to wear my Sunday best, even though I had serious issues with a few of my garments and other items I might refer to today as accessories. The black buckled boots for rainy mornings and the little English riding cap that the parents thought was so cute and beneficial, were banes of my existence on that 7th day at church. I always wore a tie, but that was no problem. After all, in a few short years, I'd spend four years wearing them in high school. And then there was the winter coat. Where or where did they find that? It was a puky brown color with some type of fur collar. I drove them crazy by demanding to wear it collar up to try to disguise it. Hey Mom, Dad, I'm trying to get girls here! Yes, even at church. Some nights, I still wake up in a cold sweat thinking I've got to find that black footwear. Fast forward to today... why oh why I'm I fixated on Project Runway, that fashion design show? Ok, take Heidi Klum out of the equation, and why, why, why?

  2. Take Heidi Klum out of the picture????? You are kidding yourself, she's the answer to your whys..........and you know it.
As for fashion, whatever your parents did must have worked as you always look great when you dress up, and I mean normal dress up, not just wedding stuff.
    And you still wear hats!

  3. I'm sorry I can't help you. Methinks you might have serious clothing issues which can be helped only by a huge expenditure at the Ralph Lauren store. Just stay clear of black buckled boots and little English riding hats!

  4. Parents have much to answer for, including me. Two nights ago we looked at some old videos with my daughter and her fiancee. Why did we dress her brother like that for pre-school "graduation"? I am so embarrassed.

  6. I haven't watched that show Bird. I'm too fixated on watching questionable designers fix up people's junky houses on HGTV and fashion disasters get a new look on What Not to Wear! There you have it, I've bared my soul.

Now let's not talk about the recurring nightmare I have of the time at age 8 that my mom gave me a Tonette home permanent and I wore a hat to church to try and hide the fuzz!

  7. Love your stories! Hope the nightmares stop. ;)

  8. I cringe at your comments when I recall the "cute" clothes I put on my own kids. I like the idea of thrift shops as seen in your photo. Second time around is a good idea!

  9. Cute post... Wish you'd show us some pictures of you in your little riding cap and black-buckled boots...

My parents made me wear some kind of heavy wool peacoat. I was heavy enough but then had a cape over top of it... Talk about carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders!!!! ha

  11. Funny now my son is embarrassed by his clothing in old photos. That was the style then.

  13. Virginia's comment made me cringe. I had the same parental embarrassment. My mother gave all three of us girls Toni home perms and the frizzy hair that resulted was a huge embarrassment.

  14. Parents have a habit of dressing their children in clothes that they think are adorable, but are endlessly embarrassing for the kids. You seem to have survived it : )

Happy Sunday, sans black buckle boots.

  15. I have some very strange memories of clothing...

This is very posh second hand stuff...

  16. Take Heidi out of the picture?!! You're lying to yourself! I agree with E. - you always look good (probably one of the best dressed teachers at school, in my opinion, and you know how fussy I am!!).

  17. My brothers had to deal w/those black buckle boots. For my sister & me, one of the ugliest accessories was the babushka. Glad it didn't last too long.

  18. With 6 children to get ready for church on Sundays (all girls), it was a bit crazy to make sure that everyone had shoes on the right feet. I think that until I was about 10 years old (the oldest of the 6), we all dressed alike. Yes, there are photos but I have not seen them in quite some time.... thankfully!

  21. Birdman -- Your photo is sharp and colorful -- as it should be when photographing such an upscale used clothing storefront. Very nice! - barbara
